Taylor Swift received the Milestone Award at the ACMs from her mother, Andrea Finlay and gave an emotional speech. It marked her first public appearance together with her since sharing the news that her mother is battling cancer.
For Taylor Swift on stage at the 50th anniversary of the ACM Awards before the enormous crowd at the AT&T Stadium in Texas it was clearly a bittersweet moment. She got her start as a country-pop music singer, and, despite her rebranding of late as a bona fide pop music superstar, she returned to her roots, and was among the seven honored this year with the Milestone Award by the Academy of Country Music. She was in stellar company as fellow honorees were George Strait, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Kenny Chesney, Brooks & Dunn, and Miranda Lambert.
Taylor Swift’s mother, Andrea Finlay gave a poignant introduction, saying of her daughter, “I’ve watched this milestone artist from the time she was a tangled-hair little girl…Full of imagination and creativity until right now when she prepares for her next world tour.”
She went on to speak lovingly of her daughter, saying that her “favorite thing to do is to write a song, tell a story, play guitar or piano.” She went on to say, “aI’ve seen those things carry through her every emotion, every experience in her life, good or bad.”
The tearful Andrea Finlay concluded, saying, “I am a very proud mom.”
When Taylor Swift took to the podium, she began by saying, “Somebody once told me that you truly see who a person is when you tell them something you don’t want to hear.”
Speaking of her musical transition, she went on to say, “So, to the country music community, when I told you I wanted to make a pop album and wanted to explore other genres, you showed me who you are with the grace that you accepted that with. I will never forget it.”
She continued her tribute to the country music world, saying, “You showed me who you are with the grace that you accepted that with. I’m so unbelievably proud that I learned to treat people with kindness and respect through country music.”
And yes, there are the unmistakable references to time marching on, as Taylor Swift leaves Nashville behind, both figuratively and literally, as of late she has become a tourism ambassador for New York City, and her string of hit songs from her pop music album, ‘1989,’ are far away from her Nashville roots and the emerging pop music icon is embarking on a tour, entertaining longtime fans and new fans as well.
Not surprisingly, Taylor Swift’s Milestone Award acceptance speech — along with her mother’s heartfelt introduction — has has gone viral, and you can see it all unfolding in the video below.
