Kanye West gave a surprise performance at Coachella as he took to the stage during The Weeknd’s live set. The video has gone viral, and revels the hip-hop icon delivering a crowd-pleasing performance of some of his signature hits.
Kanye West is among this year’s TIME 100 Most Influential, and listed among the “titans” alongside the likes of Apple CEO Tim Cook and SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels. In the essay, he is dubbed a “boundary breaker,” and he graces one of the special issue’s five covers.
Now in the midst of the honor and the attention, he took to the stage quite by surprise at this year’s Coachella Festival, performing during the live set of Canadian R&B singer-songwriter The Weeknd, stage name of Abel Tesfaye.
It began with what was, in retrospect, a perfect setup. The Weeknd was performing two of Kanye West’s smash hits, “Heartless” from the album, “808s & Heartbreak” of 2009, followed by “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” from his 2007 album, “Graduation.” All seemingly, thus far as a tribute.
But suddenly, there he was, the man himself, Kanye West on stage. Together with The Weeknd he performed three more signature hits “I Don’t Like,” “Black Skinhead,” from his most recent album, “Yeezus,” and finally, closing out the four-song set with his latest single, “All Day.”
It marks the first time Kanye West has performed at Coachella since 2011. Yes, it has been that long! That alone was was more than enough to set social media abuzz yet again. That performance, four years ago, is still talked about.
It lives on and on in digital history; Google it and you can watch the full set and read glowing reviews from the likes of The Hollywood Reporter which called it “one of the great hip-hop sets of all time.” Yes, musically speaking, it was one of his finest moments, and was unfettered by his onstage commentary and/or rants that sometimes overshadow his performances.
