Sam Smith opened up about his struggle with food and emotional eating and how he was bullied both for his weight and for being gay, growing up. The British soul singer spoke candidly in an television interview in Australia on how he is coming to grips with the longtime struggle
The 23-year-old Sam Smith has gone from the notable featured artist on Naughty Boy’s hit single ‘La La La’ to international pop music superstar in a very short time, beginning with his international smash hit, “Stay with Me.” Earlier this year he won four Grammys and two Brit Awards for his major-label debut studio album, “In the Lonely Hour.”
He has shared his emotional journey, not just in his autobiographical debut album, but also in many interviews. Now after speaking openly about his sexuality last year — revealing that he has been openly gay since he was 10 years old, and facing bullying as a result — this year he has similarly made the rounds in sharing his longtime struggle with his weight and with food.
Along with documenting his weight loss with Instagram photos (below) he has been candid about the difficulty he has faced. He told Australia’s ‘A Current Affair’ about just how severe the addiction to food was and how it has ruled his life. In his words, “‘From a young age food has controlled me.”
He went on to say, “When I was at school and wasn’t having a great time or when music wasn’t going very well. I would eat, eat. Eating would make me feel better, when I felt lonely I would eat.”
As for the bullying, he made an important distinction between being bullied for his sexuality versus for his weight. He said, “If someone calls me a f—– it’s like ‘I am gay and I’m proud to be gay’ so there’s no issues. But if someone calls you fat, that’s something I want to change.”
In previous interviews, as well as in several Instagram pictures, he has credited British celebrity nutritionist Amelia Freer for helping him. In an Instagram caption he said that thanks to her he has “completely transformed my relationship with food.” He has also touted her bestselling book, “Eat. Nourish. Glow” and its healthy approach to food and to weight loss.
