Laverne Cox Bares All for Allure Magazine: Transgender Actress Makes History

April 17, 2015

Laverne Cox has made history in bearing all for ‘Allure’ magazine’s annual issue celebrating the bodies of women. ‘The Orange Is the New Black’ star and LGBT activist is among the five women who cover the publication’s most anticipated issue.

The 30-year-old transgender actress shares the cover honors for the May Allure nude issue with fellow actresses Jordana Brewster, Sandrine Holt, Nicole Beharie and Katheryn Winnick.

Aside from the sheer physical beauty of the photos, Laverne Cox is making history. She told Allure that she had reservations about posing in the buff initially. She said, “‘I said no initially, thought about it, and said no again.” She went on to explain why she changed her mind, saying, “But I’m a black transgender woman. I felt this could be really powerful for the communities that I represent.”

She added, “Black women are not often told that we’re beautiful unless we align with certain standards. Trans women certainly are not told we’re beautiful.”

An understatement, indeed. Hardly a few weeks go by without some controversy arising over criticism of a black woman’s looks, and her failure to conform to white standards of beauty. A New York Times writer calling Viola Davis “less classically beautiful” being one such example.

Underscoring the issue even further, Cox went on to say, “Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about her body might be inspiring for some folks. There’s a beauty in the things we think are imperfect. It sounds very cliché, but it’s true.”

So yes, Laverne Cox is merely telling the painful truth here. And, as she continues to do so, her stature as a public figure and an advocate continues to rise. Coincidentally as the Allure magazine issue hits newsstands, she has also been named among the TIME magazine 100.

She has become a household name portraying Sophia Burset in the hit Netflix series ‘Orange Is the New Black.’ But her influence goes far beyond the confines of series drama and celebrity coverage.

After the publication of the cover, Laverne Cox took to Instagram to express her gratitude, saying, “Thanks to everyone at @allure magazine for making me feel so comfortable taking off my clothes for the camera for your May issue.” She went on to praise the photographer, Norman Jean Roy, calling him a “genius.”
