March 31, 2015

The Comedy Central Justin Bieber Roast has come and gone. Has it lived up to hype and anticipation? See a roundup of what the TV critics are saying in their reviews and check out video highlights below!

Justin Bieber

Even before the program had its broadcast premiere on Comedy Central it had become a trending topic in social media. Now that we’re all treated, let’s say, to the full roast of Justin Bieber instead of just the appetizers, the topic has all but broken the Internet.

It was quite a diverse lineup, from host Kevin Hart, to the likes of Martha Stewart, Shaquille O’Neal, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Natasha Leggero, Chris D’Elia, Hannibal Buress and Pete Davidson just to name a few.

While we might think of roasts more appropriate for a star who’s had a few more years on this earth than a mere 21, we must also concede that this particular 21-year-old has been begging for such a roast with behavior too outrageous to merely leave for late-night talk show hosts. Surely a full-fledged roast was in order.

And it attracted a massive viewership and thus, was a bona fide success for Comedy Central; Variety, Deadline Hollywood and other publications were quick to point out that it was the network’s third largest viewership ever, according to Nielson ratings. Perhaps too it may help serve to jumpstart Justin Bieber’s music career as the roast also has functioned as a marquee event in his recent apology tour. That being a more subjective assessment, not measured in statistics, has become an ongoing topic of speculation.

As social media weighs in, so do the TV critics. Here’s a roundup of what some have had to say.

“…. “Comedy Central spun out a smart, crisp three-minute Justin Bieber roast Monday night. Then wrapped it in two hours of meandering dirty jokes that were mostly about everyone else who surrounded him on the stage. It’s a gambit lifted directly from Bieber’s own pop music world. You get enough flashy other stuff going on and the audience leaves not noticing that the star only sang for 15 minutes…..” — New York Daily News

“…. There were several surprises, including an appearance by Bieber’s monkey that he abandoned in a German zoo, as well as an unexpected appearance by Ron Burgundy, the character Will Ferrell plays in the “Anchorman” movies. While most slammed Bieber’s past mistakes, Ferrell’s Burgundy commended him, joking: “I always encouraged people to stay classy. And what’s more classy than hanging out with Floyd Mayweather?”…” — Variety

“…. At the end of his time, Bieber abruptly switched tone and solemnly asked for forgiveness. It was so boring, such a departure from the tone of event, and so nakedly self-serving that I didn’t bother transcribing it. Maybe listening to hours of jokes about Brazilian prostitutes and Martha Stewart’s racism will turn your heart cold. …” — — The Verge

“….“The Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber” on Monday night was everything you might expect: Vulgar and mean, all to the delight of the hundreds in the crowd excited to see the pop singer get skewered. However, it also had a distinct underlying theme: It’s time for Bieber to grow up….” – Washington Post
