March 29, 2015

Dwayne Johnson was the host of Saturday Night Live. The ‘Furious 7′ star formerly known as The Rock marked his fourth time as host. Did he deliver the goods this time around? See a roundup of what the TV critics are saying in their reviews and check out video highlights of the episode below!

Dwayne Johnson

In the days leading up to the much anticipated release of ‘Furious 7′ there was no question we would see one of its stars taking to the stage of the famed studio 8H, it was just a matter of which one. That honor has fallen to Dwayne Johnson, formerly known as The Rock who’s now one step closer to joining the Five-Timers Club of hosts which includes the likes of Steve Martin, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Drew Barrymore, and Christopher Walken among others. In his previous three times as host he’s proved popular and displayed a comedic range that won him favorable reviews.

This time around, he once again delved into some edgy skits and made great use of that comedic range. In the cold open he reprised his role as The Rock Obama, a mashup of his previous wrestling persona The Rock and our current President. And once again, as he threw people out of windows, asked “Senator Ted Cruz” if he could “crush his head” and such. In other words, a good time was had by all!

His monologue was another crowd pleaser as he capitalized on his solid success as an action-adventure star, and declared he was “Franchise Viagra”and sang a song detailing his blockbuster adventures. Some of the movie titles, parodies though they may be, are not so far from those of real movies. A particular standout was “Zero Dark Thirty-One” in which he declared he had killed the ghost of Saddam Hussein.

And not surprisingly, later on, he handily mocked his The Rock wrestling days with a Wrestlemania Promo skit.

So what did the critics have to say of Dwayne Johnson as a returning host and the episode as a whole? Here’s a roundup.

“…. While his fourth SNL hosting stint took place on the same night as the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony (R.I.P. and congrats, Macho Man), Dwayne Johnson made his case for SNL HOF induction (or at least the Five Timers Club) with one of the most assured and hilarious appearances in recent memory. In a career spent in front of cameras, there’s something so calculatedly wonderful in Johnson’s persona that it’d be annoying if it didn’t come off so, well, wonderful….” — AV Club

“….The first half of tonight’s show was hysterical; it went off the side of the cliff a little in the second half, but there’s no doubt that from start to finish, Johnson put his all into this and gave us some of the funniest sketches we’ve seen in a long time. Here’s to hoping he joins the five-timers club very soon. Grade: A-….” — Carter Matt

“…. A definite highlight was seeing the actor dressed as a vigilante Bambi for a Disney film reboot that starred the Furious 7 castmemebers. “When I was boy, they took away my mother,” Bambi said in voiceover. “Now, it’s time for them to pay … dearly.” …” — — The Hollywood Reporter

“….It’s almost too easy to declare that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson “rocked” as host of this week’s Saturday Night Live — but that doesn’t mean such a statement would be inaccurate. […]

“Johnson proved so fearlessly committed to his punch lines that he even scored a few laughs during a throwaway musical monologue about his status as “box-office Viagra” and a cold open that found him bringing to life a new (and amusingly enraged) side of Jay Pharoah’s accurate but ultimately tepid Barack Obama impression….” – TV Line
