March 26, 2015

Zayn Malik has broken his silence on leaving One Direction and he has confirmed a solo career. His departure from the boy band launched much speculation as to his true motives and reasons. Now, in his first interview since quitting the band, he speaks out.

In his interview with The Sun, as People magazine reports, the 22-year-old Zayn Malik, said of his decision, “It is crazy and wild and a bit mad.” He added, “But at the same time I’ve never felt more in control in my life. And I feel like I’m doing what’s right – right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good.”

It was the news that shocked the fans, the One Directioners as well as the music industry and entertainment industry. It’s not every day that someone leaves such a hugely popular band, especially one that he has been with since its formation. In this case, it was The X-Factor UK that gave the band its start. From the very beginning it’s been the quintet — — Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik — but now it’s a quartet as Malik announced he was leaving in a written statement.

He addressed rumors that he was not getting along with his band mates, as he said, “My band has been really supportive. They’ve been cool about it.” He continued, saying, “And they understand that, you know, it’s not real to me anymore.”

His interview revealed that this was not a snap decision, as he noted, “I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of other people’s happiness.” He added, “And that was mainly for the fans. I only ever tried to do it for the fans.”

He went on to say of One Directioners, “I feel like I’ve let the fans down but I can’t do this anymore.” He added, ” It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not the real me.”

He also said that his fiance, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards of Little Mix, was “very supportive” of the decision he had made.

And yes, he spoke of a future solo career but did not announce a new album or a release date. He merely said, “I’m just going to chill man. I’m just going to be me for a while.” He did however confirm that his worked with hitmaker producer Naughty Boy (Emeli Sandé’s “Heaven,” “‘La La La” featuring Sam Smith) on his debut solo single.

Fans had begun to blame his fiance some dubbing her the Yoko Ono of One Direction. If nothing else, it did demonstrate that young fans had a grasp of split-up of The Beatles and John Lennon, a chapter of music history which unfolded long before they were born. Nonetheless scapegoating a person was not the solution. The true solution was to hear from Malik himself.

It will be interesting to see in the days and weeks going forward as to how fans will continue to react. And similarly whether they will embrace Zayn Malik as a solo artist. For now, this is all that we know, as the story is continuing.
