Chris Hemsworth, SNL Host: Review Roundup, Video Highlights

March 8, 2015

Chris Hemsworth made his debut as host of Saturday Night Live. People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive brought with him his famous brothers, ‘Hunger Games’ star Liam Hemsworth, ‘Neighbors’ star Luke Hemsworth and many surprises. See a roundup of TV critics’ reviews and video highlights of the episode below!

Chris Hemsworth

Yes, surprising as it may seem, Chris Hemsworth had not hosted SNL, at least not until now. But at long last, as many a star of a Marvel superhero franchise has graced the famed Studio 8H stage, finally now it was Hemsworth’s opportunity. Along the way, as noted, the ‘Thor’ star and ‘Avengers’ star has picked up another accolade as he is the reigning People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive.

All these credentials may spark curiosity and interest, but the question remains, did he deliver, as host? For starters, in his monologue he shared the stage with famous brother Liam Hemsworth of ‘The Hunger Games’ and Luke Hemsworth, star of the Australian soap ‘Neighbors.’ Well, we may have thought that was the extent of the Hemsworth brothers, and, well, we were quickly proven wrong as the trio were joined by a previously unknown brother “Callum Hemsworth,” portrayed by cast member Kenan Thompson.

Along the way there were the usual expected spoofs of superhero movies, notably in an American Express commercial which saw Hemsworth bemoaning his superhero “hardships” and later on we had a full-fledged ‘Avengers’ skit.

This being the early days of the 2016 Presidential race, where all the candidates are coy about their intentions, we had also the expected cold open on Hillary Clinton and the controversy over her private email account she used while serving as Secretary of State. This time it was Kate McKinnon taking on the role, admirably and effectively, even as we all still have our memories of Amy Poehler being more Hillary than Hillary. And Zac Brown Band as musical guests went a long way towards enlivening the evening.

So what did the critics have to say of Chris Hemsworth as host and the episode overall? Here’s a roundup.

“…. Throughout his stint as host, Hemsworth goofed around amiably and did what was asked, although he never cut loose (or was encouraged to), instead proving a pleasant, workmanlike presence in all his sketches. He played straight man in almost every sketch tonight, and while he was good at it, it didn’t make for scintillating hosting. With that in mind, there’s not every larger-than-life superhero action star who could maintain straight man integrity playing opposite a chicken, so point: Hemsworth on that one. …” — AV Club

“…We’re not going to say that this show was perfect, since it started week and both Bayer and Bobby Moynihan were vastly underused. With that being said, Hemsworth was great and this show definitely exceeded expectations. Grade: B+…..” — Carter Matt

“….Hemsworth proved to have a surprising amount of range, and while most sketches played up his good looks, he wasn’t afraid to clown around and get silly. Perhaps he should consider a comedy film in his future, especially since there won’t be a Blackhat 2 anytime soon. …” — — The Hollywood Reporter

“….In his monologue, ‘Avengers’ star Chris Hemsworth admitted the last time he was on live TV, he was a contestant on the Australian version of Dancing With the Stars. Whoa. That’s quite a confession. Clearly a guy who dresses up in a costume to tango and rumba in front of a camera can’t have too many reservations when it comes to sketch comedy. And he didn’t. Whether he was called on to shake his butt on a talk show or pour his heart out to a real live chicken – he did it all happily and made a good temporary cast member….” – Toronto Star
