Kanye West’s ‘Only One’ Music Video with Daughter North West Premieres on ‘Ellen DeGeneres Show’

January 29, 2015

Kanye West premiered the official music video for “Only One,” his first-ever collaboration with Paul McCartney, during his interview on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show.’ Both he and his daughter North West are seen in the emotionally touching visuals — directed by celebrated filmmaker Spike Jonze — for the tender and sweet ballad which he wrote from the perspective of his late mother, Donda West.

Kanye West and Paul McCartney surprised the world on New Year’s Eve with the release of their first ever collaboration. The well-received song now has a music video.

But rather than a sudden surprise release, Kanye West returned to a previous venue of choice, ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ where he has premiered some of his other notable videos throughout the years.

He also sat for an interview and was candid on topics both personal and professional. The couple known as Kimye has been much in the news, as Kim Kardashian has been vocal about her desire to have another child. For his part, Kanye West told Ellen DeGeneres, “We’re trying. I just want whatever Kim wants.”

When DeGeneres noted that West seems “less angry” now as a married man with a family, he acknowledged this to be true, saying, “I was going through my version of the ‘terrible Twos.’ My daughter, she wants to express herself but she just doesn’t have the words for it. For me, there’s so many things I want to do with film and clothing and I just didn’t have the words or the resources or the backing or the perception that I could do it being a rapper.”

Kanye West also spoke about his upcoming album and he conceded that he does not yet have a title for it. He said, “I don’t know yet. We’re still trying to find it. Trying to find the vibe.” He elaborated, saying, “This transition from what I felt when I did Yeezus to what I feel now, and we’re just creating, so we haven’t found it yet.”

As for the music video, it debuted in full on his Web site the same day as the interview. In this day and age of edgy and controversial videos, this one in contrast is infused with familial sentiment.

Kanye West holds his young daughter in his arms as he sings the touching lines which are voiced in the perspective of his late mother who speaks seemingly from the after life with such words as, “I talked to God about you/He said he sent you an angel / And look at all that he gave you.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, at the time of the surprise release of the song, Kanye West said of the song, “”My mom was singing to me, and through me to my daughter.”
