The death of famed ESPN sportscaster Stuart Scott of cancer at age 49 sparked an immense reaction on Twitter from sports figures, public figures, celebrities and fans alike. As is always the case, social media became the venue of choice to express condolences and share remembrances and tributes. Here is a roundup of what is being said.

It was a Sunday morning, on January 4th, at the start of a New Year, that news broke of the much admired anchor’s passing. His colleagues at ESPN broke the news on television even as the network released a statement online. It was left to Hannah Storm at ESPN to make the initial announcement, as she was joined by Chris Berman, Tom Jackson, Keyshawn Johnson, Cris Carter and Mike Ditka live on air by who all paid tribute.

From there, news traveled quickly all over the world. His life was the embodiment of perseverance and optimism in the face of an immense challenge. In one of his last Tweets, he made it clear that he was not giving him. He said, in November: “Rumor bout me in hospice. Not True. Airball. Swing & a miss. I continue treatment for C & missed some work but Hospice? No. Fighting? YES!”

This was just months after he had taken to the stage to accept the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs in July. Video of his moving speech, which you can see below, went viral.

Reactions to his death are numerous and steadily growing as many pay tribute, share remembrances and/or offer words of condolence. Above all, while at 49 he is gone much too soon, his life is testament to courage. You can see a roundup of reactions along with the video below.
