Here is the first trailer for ‘Whitney,’ the Lifetime Whitney Houston biopic, with Yaya DaCosta in the title role. The TV movie, which was directed by Angela Basset in her directorial debut, has been the subject of intense controversy and discussion. We now have our first glimpse.

Lately, when it comes to biopics, Lifetime Channel has not fared particularly well. The chorus of criticism over the channel’s ‘Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B’ biopic was immense, as legitimate concerns were raised, particularly over the depiction of the late R&B singer and her relationship with and underage marriage to R Kelly.

And now the even more controversial ‘Whitney’ biopic is set to premiere in January. Family members of the late legendary diva voiced their objections even before production began. To say the least, the project did not have the blessing of the Whitney Houston estate.

Pat Houston, sister of Whitney Houston, notably was quoted as saying, ““Whitney is certainly worthy of more than a television movie. If Whitney were here today, this would not be happening.”

And now we have the trailer, and we have actress and ANTM alum Yaya DaCosta portraying Whitney Houston. The trailer is full of tension and drama, perhaps verging in melodrama — in such short takes it’s difficult to discern. The striking physical resemblance to Whitney Houston is at times uncanny, and there are scenes of domestic disarray with Arlen Escarpeta portraying Houston’s ex-husband, Bobbie Brown.

At one point, she is heard uttering the frankly tragic line to him, “I am putting everything on the line; my career, everything.”

In another glimpse we see her smoking a cigarette, and in yet another glimpse, her mentor, music industry legend Clive Davis (portrayed by Mark Rolston) warning her to take care of her voice.

If nothing else, the movie causes us to relive the tabloid drama and perhaps as in life it may overshadow Whitney Houston’s incomparable legacy as a singer who had, in her heyday, an incredible voice we will never ever forget.

The first trailer is below. ‘Whitney’ is set to premiere on January 17th on Lifetime.
