Mariah Carey Sings ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ Live at Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting (Video, Photos)

December 4, 2014

Mariah Carey sang her classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ live at the annual Christmas at Rockefeller Center tree lighting. The performance also served to mark the 20th anniversary of its release. You can see the pictures and the video of the iconic moments below!

As electrifying as it was for the tens of thousands gathered in Rockefeller Center for the much-anticipated tree lighting ceremony, Mariah Carey’s performance was not planned as such. And, as such, much has been made of — speculation that is — of the circumstances as to why Mariah Carey did not arrive in time for what was to have been the recording of the performance for the NBC broadcast. Specifically some celebrity news outlets report that she was detained by divorce matters, as she is, even in the midst of holiday cheer splitting from her husband Nick Cannon, the father of their young twins.

She gave no real clues, but did Tweet: “Last night’s situation was beyond my control. I apologize to all that showed up, you know that I would never want to disappoint you.”

Nonetheless, Mariah Carey kicked off the evening of performances singing the song which was first released in 1994 and has since gone on to become an international hit, year after year, indeed a classic which we hear everywhere as part of the mix of holiday songs on the airwaves.

Mariah Carey has been on tour recently in Asia in support of her 14th album, ‘Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse’ which is her first since 2009’s ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.’ While she has faced the usual barrage of criticism over her live singing, it’s always a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

The superstar diva took to the microphone, the live cameras and the international audience and the YouTube video audience in perpetuity and sang her iconic song.

Hours later, video of her isolated vocals went viral as did criticism of her performance. Typically, haters began to hate.
