Jason Derulo opened up about his split from longtime girlfriend and fellow R&B singer Jordin Sparks in a radio interview on ‘On Air with Ryan Seacrest. He denied rumors that he had cheated on Sparks and denied having impregnated another woman, model Carmen Ortega, as some reports had claimed.

The longtime couple seemed destined to become music’s next royal couple. It was just a year ago, last September, that Jordan Sparks was Jason Derulo’s love interest in the music video for his autobiographical song ‘Marry Me.’

But much as changed since then. As is typical when a high profile couple splits rumors grow wild in spite of the best PR efforts.

Jason Derulo called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and spoke out to push back against the speculation. He said in part, “I’m not one to throw my business out on the street, but I thought it was important because things are getting a little out of hand.”

He went on to reference the report that he had impregnated Carmen Ortega and that this has led to the split. He said, ““I’m seeing all kind of stories about somebody getting pregnant, infidelity, things like me calling it off because of me being too busy and because of my newfound success.”

He added, “So I thought it was important for me to call in and clear the air” and proceeded to speak about his breakup with Jordin Sparks whom he had dated for more than two years. He said that “in a nutshell, there was a lot of tension in the relationship for a lot of different reasons.”

Continuing, he said, “Every relationship has ups and downs. There was a lot of pressures of marriage.”

Indeed, in the public eye, it seemed inevitable that the couple would marry. There was, as noted, that song “Marry Me.”

Derulo said of these pressures, “There was a lot of arguing and stuff like that that just weighed on our relationship over time. When you stop having more good times than bad times, it’s time to call it quits. It becomes something that is unhealthy.”

He went on to add, ““To be fair, it was not just from her either. It was kind of from everybody. That’s not the sole reason, but it definitely played a part.”

The aftermath of the split begs the question, on what terms are they? Might we expect an end to future musical collaboration. Derulo didn’t go so far as to say they were on good terms, but instead said “It’s not a bad situation.” He went on to elaborate a bit, saying, “There’s no bad blood. We didn’t end off on a weird way or a negative way. It’s not like we’re hitting each other up, like, ‘Hey, what are you doing today?’”

He also spoke of the impact on his performances — he about to embark on the ‘Talk Dirty’ tour so named after his ubiquitous smash hit — and said, ““I think it will be tough to perform a lot of different songs, but maybe it will be special in a different way.”

He added, ““That was a huge time in my life. It doesn’t go away. Those times in my life when I felt like that, I really did feel like that.” Continuing, he said, “A song like ‘Vertigo,’ that was a duet, I think it’s important for me to address the situation. I’m not going to not perform the song.”

No doubt they will prevail, now separately, Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo. As he embarks on the tour, she is branching into acting again, and will be seen in the screen adaptation of ‘Left Behind’ opposite Nicholas Cage.
