Lisa Ling Reveals She Had a Sugar Daddy: Dated Wealthy Older Man Before Her Marriage

September 26, 2014

Lisa Ling reveals that before she got married she dated a wealthy older man who was her sugar daddy, taking her on trips around the world and seducing her into a rich lifestyle. She spoke of her past as part of her new series on CNN, This Is Life with Lisa Ling, and the premiere episode which explores sugar daddy dating.

The 41-year-old journalist and former co-host of ‘The View’ returns to CNN and prime time television in a big way taking on a succession of spicy topics in the program, ‘This Is Life with Lisa Ling,’ of which she is both executive producer and host. The subject of sugar daddies and sugar babes is perennially in the news, as are the Web sites which facilitate the mutually beneficial liaisons between rich men and typically younger women.

While sugar daddies and such arrangements are not new, it has become much more normalized with the proliferation of Web sites such as Seeking Arrangement — from which Lisa Ling finds a few who are willing to speak on camera.

In an accompanying story published online on Lisa Ling reveals that she has had first-hand experience with the topic years before marrying her husband, Dr Paul Song, an oncologist. She spoke of a man whom she calls by a pseudonym, Tom. Describing him as “much older and more successful” than she was she went on to say, “We started dating in my early 30s at a time when my career had me traveling all over the world to report stories.”

She went on to add, “I was neither looking for a relationship nor cared to be in one.” She spoke of the dynamics of their arrangement, saying, “Like many men of similar ilk, Tom could be aggressive about acquiring things he wanted. Before I knew it, I was being sucked into his vortex.”

And, in retrospect, she admitted the appeal of the arrangement, saying, “It started to become glaringly apparent that I was being seduced by a lifestyle. I was becoming a sugar baby. Or at least, that’s how I felt.”

Yet it was at variance with her own values, as she goes on to characterize herself as “fiercely independent” and even more to the point, “a die-hard feminist” noting that such values are deeply rooted in her past; she had lived them, as the child of divorced parents who was earning a living by age 16.

She also said, “He was not at all a bad person, but increasingly, I was starting to feel owned and that I was losing myself.”

While she does not give details of the parting, she dose write from retrospect as a married woman and the mother of their young child.

And too, she is a journalist covering a story which is of increasing cultural and social significance even as she comes out, so to speak, and perhaps pushes sugar daddy dating that much further into the mainstream. After all, in recent years, it has become an option for women who are in need of paying tuition. The sugar babes have made their choice. Years of student loan debt and jobs that barely chip away at such debt? Or possibly the allure of having financial freedom and a lifestyle which, frankly, is glamorized but still has its challenges and potential pitfalls like any other.
