Gwyneth Paltrow Covers Viva Magazine, Talks Motherhood, Beauty and Fitness

September 25, 2014

Gwyneth Paltrow graces the cover of Viva magazine and talks about what it has been like for her balancing motherhood and her career. The face of Max Factor in a new ad campaign evoking iconic Hollywood stars she also speaks about her concept of beauty and talks about her fitness routine.

After causing controversy on the topic previously, the 42-year old mother of two strikes a much different tone. Much has happened this year, after all, as she and her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin split with an announcement that they were “consciously uncoupling” that provokes incessant mocking which could not have made the separation in the public eye any easier for them.

In her interview with Viva magazine, Gwyneth Paltrow speaks solely about her duties as a mother of the couple’s 10-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son. She said, “Some days I just think I am failing everywhere. Like today I was making lunch and saying to myself ‘this lunch is so bad’ throwing pasta in the lunch bag, yelling ‘get in the car,’ I was losing my cool.”

She went on to say, “I think it’s very hard to try to find the right balance and I think we all aspire to that balance, but it’s easier said than done. It’s just a matter of trying your best each day and not being too hard on yourself about things.”

Moving her focus away from her own experience, she began to reflect upon motherhood in general. But, as noted, this time around, Gwyneth Paltrow did not give a repeat of her controversial remarks on working mothers and did not raise any ire as she did before when she said it was more difficult for her to be a working actress and a mother than a woman with a typical 9 to 5 job.

This time, she said, “I think when you are a working mother it is always very difficult, in fact it’s difficult if you are a mother anyway even if you are not working,’ She went on to add, ‘It’s the demand, the responsibility and the love – it’s a lot and trying to balance a career with it makes it hard.’

And, no doubt, in reference to the so-called “mommy wars” that ensued before, she said, “I have a lot of respect for women who try to do both things, because I really struggle.’

Gwyneth Paltrow has also been a lightning rod for her views on diet and fitness and for her Web site Goop and she did not neglect to address these topics. She said, “I really believe in exercise as a beauty secret. ‘I think that is the key to keeping your skin tone. You are detoxifying and it keeps you looking young and healthy. I also try to drink a lot of water and I try to eat healthy although yesterday I had a huge plate of French fries and a glass of wine – I normally try to balance this.’

She went on to explain her typical schedule saying, “I wouldn’t get up at 4am in the morning for anything… but generally my routine is that I drop my children at school and then I exercise for about an hour and a half five days a week and that way I can do some weights, muscular structure work and get in some good cardio then I am good for the day.’

She also spoke about being the face of Max Factor, and shared a few tidbits. She told the publication, that Max Factor “wanted an actress to represent the brand.” She went on to say of the company, “And to me Max Factor is the most iconic movie make-up of all time so when they asked me to be in the campaign I was thrilled… I love the different character aspect of it all. I was honored to be asked.”

She also revealed her favorite iconic Hollywood actress, saying, “I think all of them were amazing, but I think I would have to say Audrey Hepburn because I love that look and obviously she was one of my favorite actresses of all time.”

She added, “I think that the great icons and stars have an extra quality and I don’t know that I can articulate exactly what it is, but if you look at Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth or Katharine Hepburn, they all have this amazing other worldly quality. There is something mysterious about them that is strong and powerful.’
