Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal Pay Tribute to Robin Williams on ‘The View’ (Video)

Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal paid an emotional and at times tearful tribute to the late Robin Williams during a special segment on ‘The View.’ The two comedians shared a decades long friendship and numerous collaborations with the comedic legends, including their many ‘Comic Relief’ telethons.

Just weeks after the tragic and untimely death of the 63-year-old Robin Williams by suicide, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal reminisced before the studio audience and the viewing audience worldwide, sharing stories and memories of their departed friend.

Goldberg revealed just how far back the friendship went, noting she had first met him at the San Diego Comedy Store and then became reacquainted ten years later. She knew him even before Billy Crystal did. And, as is well known the comedians gave some iconic performances during a series of ‘Comic Relief’ telethons to raise money for the homeless. She reflected on those days, saying, “They babysat me and have taken care of me for as long as I can remember. And we’ve aged together and grown up together.”

Billy Crystal said, “I hate saying, “He was.” It’s not even been two months, and it’s just so odd for everybody.” He went on to reflect upon the immense talent of the star known for such iconic movies as ‘Good Morning Vietnam,” “Dead Poets Society” and “Good Will Hunting.” He said, “‘His physical presence on a stage was amazing. Many times, we’d be together on stage, the three of us, and Whoopi and I were like his parents. It just became so sort of magical to work with him and it was just the greatest.’

Billy Crystal thus echoed the sentiments he had expressed in speaking of Robin Williams in the Primetime Emmy Awards In Memoriam tribute. At that time, he said, “It’s very hard to talk about him in the past, because he was so present, in all our lives For almost 40 years he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy.”

The segment was at once sad, poignant, bittersweet and yet peppered with humor as segments of their past collaborations on ‘Comic Relief’ were shown. Whoopi Goldberg said of those clips, “‘I still believe that we did some of the best openings for a show ever.’
