Joan Rivers’ Daughter Melissa Rivers Pays Tribute on ‘Fashion Police’ Special Episode (Video)

September 19, 2014

Melissa Rivers and ‘Fashion Police’ paid tribute to Joan Rivers in a special episode, ‘Remembering Joan,’ on E! The channel has announced that the program will continue without the late comedic great. Get the details and see video highlights of the lively and poignant homage by Melissa Rivers alongside her co-hosts Guiliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos.

Melissa Rivers was co-host with her late mother of the popular program whose future for a few days was in limbo. It was unclear whether the program would continue in the aftermath of the shocking, untimely death of Joan Rivers on September 4th a week after going into cardiac arrest after a throat procedure at an endoscopy clinic on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and being rushed to nearby Mt Sinai Hospital. The circumstances that led to her death are still under investigation.

Hours before the broadcast of the special episode E! channel ran a marathon of past episodes of ‘Fashion Police’ and also issued a statement, saying in part, “We have also thought long and hard about what Joan would have wanted as it pertains to the future of ‘Fashion Police.’ We decided, with Melissa Rivers’ blessing, that Joan would have wanted the franchise to continue.”

As noted, Melissa Rivers was joined on the special episode by three co-hosts; Guiliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos. It marked her first television appearance since her mother’s death. Among the surprising revelations from the episode was the handwritten letter of condolence that President Barack Obama sent her.

He as well as First Lady Michelle Obama had recently been on the receiving end of some of Joan Rivers’ trademark unsparing humor, as she had suggested that he was gay and that the First Lady was transgender. The barb was sparked by a question from a reporter as to whether or not she though we would have a gay president in America.

Regardless of one’s opinion of his politics and policies we can all find agreement in what President Obama said of the late comedic great in the letter which Melissa Rivers read. In part, “Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think.”

The episode was fast-paced and lively, and filled with many clips of Joan Rivers doing what she did best. These were interspersed with the reminiscing of Melissa Rivers and her co-hosts. And much laughter. Make that much, much laughter. It would woudl be safe to say the ‘Fashion Police’ tribute would get Joan Rivers’ seal of approval.
