Chris Brown opens up about what it was like being in jail and how therapy is helping him. In a rare interview, the R&B music star reflected upon his travails which have drawn so publicity in recent years at the expense of his music even as he releases a new and long-awaited album, ‘X.’

The 25-year-old singer spoke with Extra’s Mario Lopez as a part of the publicity blitz for the release of ‘X.’ The album is out after numerous delays. For those who have followed Chris Brown’s career in the years since his conviction on felonies after the 2009 domestic violence incident with fellow music superstar and then-girlfriend Rihanna, it’s been more about the legal entanglements, the episodes of violent behavior and the trips to rehab for anger management than it has been about the music.

Parole violations and assault charges in recent months had sidelined his career once again and landed him in a L.A. jail for three months. Chris Brown opened up about jail time and told Extra, “It was definitely one of the things I’ll never forget… I think for me it’s now about what’s the purpose and what’s the goal that Chris Brown as a person and Chris Brown as an artist is trying to portray.”

Asked what the experience had taught him, he said, “For me I just learned that nobody’s invincible, everybody’s equal, at the same time no amount of celebrity status, no amount of how many fans love you, no amount of anything can deter you away from the real if you make a mistake and nobody’s excusable.”

He went on to add, “I think for me it was a humbling experience for me to become a man and mature.”

He also spoke about the effect that being in jail had had on his health, notably his weight, saying, “My normal weight is like 180, I was 215 when I got out of jail… I couldn’t fit in my jeans, fit in my clothes. I was scared to go out, I was like man, people will see me and I look fat so after a while I went and played a lot of basketball, a lot of cardio, we did the New Flame video, BET awards, a couple of other shows, I was always dancing, always dancing, trying to get my body back.”

He also opened up about what it has been like to be in therapy and said, “I see my therapist twice a week, it’s amazing and I was at first adamant about it, like, ‘I don’t want to go to therapy, I’m not going to talk to anybody,’ but as I went through it and kept talking, it’s actually very therapeutic.”

He also spoke about his new album, and said, “I wanted to be able to do music that defines Chris Brown, the 25-year-old.”

It is a reminder that the years have gone by since that 2009 domestic violence incident for which he has been linked in the public mind and, at times, has expressed his displeasure over. Now the new album has gotten some buzz not least for his musical collaboration with the rising pop music diva Ariana Grande.
