Ariana Grande Covers Marie Claire, Reveals How She Sexed Up Her Image to Achieve Pop Music Star Fame

September 15, 2014

Ariana Grande graces the cover of Marie Claire magazine and opens up about what she did to achieve fame as a singer and how she deliberately sexed up her image so as to leave behind her Nickelodeon ‘Cat Valentine’ image.

The 21-year-old Ariana Grande now has two albums to her credit, as she makes her transition; last year’s ‘Yours Truly’ and this year’s ‘My Everything.’ Back to back successes but not without a plan. Having risen to childhood stardom thanks to Nickelodeon she was now like many child stars before her she facing the challenge of growing up and maintaining a career. In her case, her ambition was to become a pop music star after her years on the Nickelodeon hit series ‘Sam & Cat.’

She told Marie Claire that her ambitions date back many years, saying, ‘I was 14 years old and ready to make an R&B album. I was like, ‘Where is that Mary J. Blige collab? Where is that Natasha Bedingfield writing session? Where is my session with India.Arie? I’m ready. Let’s go.’”

She added, “I wrote this song called ‘Higher,’ and the lyrics were too sexual, too mature. And my mom was like, ‘This is a great song, but damn, you’re too young for this.’”

She went on to speak of her first single, Put Your Hearts Up,’ which was not a success which she attributed to fans identifying her too closely with her ‘Sam & Cat’ character.

Obviously, a transition was in order. Such a transition may have a familiar ring — we did just witness in the past year Miley Cyrus making it clear that no one could mistake her for Hannah Montana — and for Ariana Grandia the method was somewhat the same.

She said, ‘“I was like, ‘Guys, there has to be a really distinct difference between me and my character. And we did that with ‘The Way.’ I dyed my hair back to brown. I made out with a rapper in the video. I made the point I wanted to make.” She added “And I was excited to do so after so many years of pretending to be somebody else in front of a lot of people.”

The rapper in question was Mac Miller. But it’s not just music videos that have seen her with rappers; most recently she and Big Sean sparked dating rumors. Perhaps this too is in keeping with the transition.

She spoke of him in the interview, neither confirming or denying such rumors, but merely recounting getting into a minor car accident with him. That and other tidbits are in the full Marie Claire interview along with the cover photo here. Watch ‘The Way’ music video that was so instrumental and the relaunch of her career below.
