Angelina Jolie on ‘Maleficent,’ Brad Pitt Wedding Plans, Health, Politics in ‘GMA’ Interview (Video)

May 21, 2014

‘Maleficent’ star Angelina Jolie opened up on a variety of topics including her wedding plans with Brad Pitt, her health, politics and whether she might run for political office and more in an interview with George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America.

The 38-year-old Oscar-winning actress will soon be seen in an uncharacteristic villainous role, as the evil fairy and title character of ‘Maleficent’ in a live-action movie that takes its premise from Disney’s classic animated movie, ‘Sleeping Beauty.’

In the interview with George Stephanopoulos Angelina Jolie revealed that her interest in the character dates back to childhood. She said, “When I was little I didn’t relate to princesses. I saw Maleficent, and I just thought she was so elegant.”

In her portrayal of the character that held such long fascination, she said, “I didn’t know what to do with the voice … so when I give my kids a bath at night I would tell them stories in different voices.” She went on to note that her “Maleficent” had an unintended effect; her children “couldn’t stop laughing.”

Jolie also spoke about her prophylactic double mastectomy about which she went public in a New York Times article. The stunning and deeply personal revelation sparked intense debate and controversy which has not abated. She said, “I really didn’t know how people would react. I didn’t know if there would be some kind of strange silly reaction.”

She went on to say that while she wasn’t worried about going public, she “didn’t expect there to be so much support.” She went on to say, “I was very moved by it…It’s connected me so much to other families, other women.”

Angelina Jolie also spoke about her wedding plans with longtime partner Brad Pitt. “We don’t have a date, and we’re not hiding anything, but we really don’t know. We talk to the kids about it once in a while. … And one of them suggested paintball. And we thought, ‘Well, different.”

She went on to say, “So who knows. You know, I think the important thing is that whatever we do it’s that the kids do have a great time, and we all — you know, take seriously the love, and the connection between all of us. But also just get silly and do something memorable.”

Asked if she would consider running for political office, she said, “I wonder if by now if my skeletons are out” — referencing remarks she had made years ago to the GMA co-anchor that she had too many skeletons to run for office. She went on to say, “They’re probably all out. She added, “If I thought I’d be effective, I would. But I’m not sure if I would ever be taken seriously in that way, and be able to be effective.”

The GMA interview is but one of several Angelina Jolie has given as ‘Maleficent’ is set to open in theaters during the Memorial Day weekend. While she has never vanished from the public spotlight — quite the opposite in fact– it is amazing that the is her first screen role in four years, and most likely will become an iconic role at that.
