Beyonce and Jay Z have surprised the entertainment world with the debut of ‘Run’ styled as a movie trailer with a huge cast of stars including Sean Penn, Don Cheadle, Blake Lively, Jake Gyllenhaal and many others. It’s the trailer not for a movie but for their co-headlining ‘On the Run’ tour.

Beyonce has already proven she is the master of the surprise release, and with this sudden seemingly out of nowhere release of the video. And as we have now seen, when Mr. Carter and Mrs. Carter unite forces, we have quite an event! What a cast. Sean Penn, Don Cheadle, Guillermo Díaz, Emmy Rossum, Jake Gyllenhaal, Blake Lively, Rashida Jones and Kidada Jones.

With a running time of more than three minutes and all of the thrills and chills of a summer blockbuster movie it builds anticipation, but no, don’t go looking to buy movie tickets, as this faux movie trailer for the ‘On the Run’ summer stadium tour which kicks off in June.

In a very real sense it is a send-up of such over-the-top promotion. It bills itself as ‘coming never.’ But of course, it’s that massive summer stadium tour instead that’s on the way. It is already a guaranteed sellout with the unavoidable massive payday for the scalpers.

The trailer was directed by famed music video director and longtime collaborator, Melina Matsoukas who also directed Beyonce’s recent ‘Pretty Hurts’ video from her self-titled visual album.

But the music takes the back stage this time, as the music superstar couple become outlaws a la contemporary Bonnie and Clyde (and not unlike their 2003 of that very title) with a high caliber arsenal to support their life of crime. Jay Z portrays a gangster with huge ambitions who takes his wife, Beyonce, along for the ride as she shows herself to be quite the gun moll.

But robbing a bank proves to be an ambition and a goal with steep consequences as Jay Z’s gangster character reflects upon what his “mentor” a fellow gangster, portrayed by Sean Penn had told him. “‘When the s–t gets bigger than the cat, get rid of the cat.’

It makes for quite the thrill ride, even if it’s less than four minutes. You can see Beyonce and Jay Z’s ‘Run’ video in its entirety below!
