Andrew Garfield as a Transgender Woman in Arcade Fire’s ‘We Exist’ Music Video

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ star Andrew Garfield is mesmerizing as a transgender woman in Arcade Fire’s ‘We Exist’ music video. The groundbreaking lyrics and the presence of an A-list Hollywood star are formidable in bringing much attention to a poignant story of identity and self-acceptance.

Yes, Andrew Garfield is known throughout the world for his portrayal of the iconic superhero Spider-Man and alter ego Peter Parker. Now he takes on a radically different and challenging role. Much of the challenge is for the viewer as the lyrics of Arcade Fire’s song ‘We Exist’ are brought to life. “…I’m different from you / But tell me why they treat me like this?…” The song is from the Canadian band’s critically acclaimed fourth studio album, “Reflektor” and was written by its frontman Win Butler.

The music video begins as Garfield, fully in character, takes the viewer along for the journey of his own transformation. It begins as he shaves his head, dons a blond wig and puts on women’s underwear and clothing.

The visually striking and emotionally gripping video has its tense and perilous moments — not least of which is Garfield’s character in a bar possibly in real, physical danger as she is kicked and pushed around. But she finds inner strength and begins to dance with confidence and strength and determination.

It builds to a triumphant finale which was shot on location at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Andrew Garfield’s transgender woman approaches the stage where Arcade Fire is playing, and as she walks up onto the stage the audience is cheering her as she dances as the band plays the song.

A pioneering video in many ways, not least of which for the presence of a Hollywood heavyweight whose mere presence in the video portraying a character can go some distance towards dispelling the stereotypes and the prejudice. If nothing else, it opens a dialogue.
