Angelina Jolie Covers ELLE, opens up about Brad Pitt Relationship and Family Life

May 7, 2014

Angelina Jolie opens up about her partner Brad Pitt, their home and family life and how she never expected to be in love and more in a cover story interview for ELLE Magazine. She is also luminously beautiful in a black-and-white photo spread.

The 38-year-old Oscar-winning actress and humanitarian will soon grace the silver screen as Maleficent, the evil fairy of the iconic 1950s Disney animated movie ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ costarring alongside Elle Fanning as well as her own daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt.

The typically guarded star opened up about her eight-year relationship with the 50-year-old Brad Pitt, saying, ” You get together and you’re two individuals and you feel inspired by each other, you challenge each other, you complement each other, drive each other beautifully crazy.”

She went on to add: ”After all these years, we have history — and when you have history with somebody, you’re friends in such a very real, deep way that there’s such a comfort, and an ease, and a deep love that comes from having been through quite a lot together.”

Angelina Jolie also reveals how unexpected all of this has been for her. Quite plainly, she states, “I never thought I’d have children, I never thought I’d be in love, I never thought I’d meet the right person. Having come from a broken home — you kind of accept that certain things feel like a fairy tale, and you just don’t look for them.”

She also opened up about her life before she settled down with Brad Pitt and eventually became the mother of their six children. She said of those days, and the public perception of her as somewhat wild. She said, “It may come out very strange, it may be interpreted wrong, but you’re trying to find out who you are…I realized that very young — that a life where you don’t live to your full potential, or you don’t experiment, or you’re afraid, or you hesitate, or there are things you know you should do but you just don’t get around to them, is a life that I’d be miserable living, and the only way to feel that I’m on the right path is just to be true to myself, whatever that may be, and that tends to come with stepping out of something that’s maybe safe or traditional.”

Fast forward to the present and she has a much different perspective as a mother. She is speaking of her children now and how she and Brad Pitt feel about them venturing into the entertainment industry. As mentioned, the venturing has already begun as their daughter, Vivienne, portrays the young Aurora in ‘Maleficent.’

She said of her, “We call her my shadow, because there’s nothing I can do to shake her. I can be tired, I can be grumpy, I can be in a terrible mood, and she doesn’t care. It’s ‘Mommy, Mommy,’ and she’ll cling to me. We knew that she would still do that thing, she’d still smile at me and insist that I pick her up. So we couldn’t really cast anybody else.”

As for the future, she said, “Brad and I made the decision that we wouldn’t keep them from sets and the fun of making movies, but we wouldn’t [glorify it either] — we wouldn’t make it a good thing or a bad thing. But I would really prefer they do something else. She added: “After two days of it, Brad and I were so stressed we never wanted to do it again.”

The ELLE cover and the visually striking photos, which evoke the film-noir era can be seen here along with more excerpts from the interview.

‘Maleficent’ sees Angelina Jolie in what is likely a blockbuster, even as there is tantalizing news of her and partner Brad Pitt in early talks towards pairing up for a movie together for which she wrote the script. But for now, we do have ‘Maleficent!’
