Neil Patrick Harris discussed the controversial series finale of ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ as well as his new Broadway show, ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ and other topics in a lively interview on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman.’

The 40-year old actor discussed the controversial series finale ending of ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ the long-running CBS sitcom which saw him portraying Barney Stinson throughout all nine seasons. Appearing on ‘The Late Show’ several weeks after the end of the show did not mean the furor over the finale had died down.

Thus Harris spoke out and defended the ending of the show saying, “”Sometimes people’s growth doesn’t really mean that they grow up.”

He went on to say, “”There are certain people who, you want them to get in a solid relationship and settle down and learn from things, and you want Barney to be the guy you can bring your mom home to, but Barney’s the guy that wants to bang your mom. And so at the end of the day, it’s not always meant to be that way.”

“It wasn’t necessarily the happy ending that people were expecting, but [HIMYM creators] Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas] knew this ending years ago and had played towards that. I was a big proponent of it and a big fan of it.”

He also talked about ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch,’ a rock musical in which he portrays a transgender woman, a German punk rocker. Harris is making his Broadway debut in the production at the Belasco Theatre. In turn, it also marks the first ever Broadway production of the musical whose book is by John Cameron Mitchell with the the music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. It originally premiered Off Broadway in the late 1990s.

Within that context he talked about the recent performance in which he cursed at an audience member who had shouted out to him, ‘I love you, Neil!” thus interrupting the play.

He explained that in shouting in character was typical of the kind of improvisation he does, noting that “crazy stuff happens because she’s not a very nice person, Hedwig.”
