‘The Rover’ Trailer: Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce in Post-Apocalyptic Australia (Video)

April 17, 2014

The first trailer for ‘The Rover’ has made its debut online. The post-apocalyptic thriller stars Robert Pattinson as a man left for dead by his brother and Guy Pearce as a man desperate for vengeance as their paths cross in the outback of Australia. The highly anticipated movie premieres at the Cannes Film Festival.

Yes, it may be Australia, but it is a world not like ours. It’s an outlaw world that has seen the end of most semblances of organized and orderly civilization. That’s what greets the inhabitants in this new movie written and directed by David Michôd (‘Animal Kingdom’), and by extension the moviegoer in the darkened theater.

Robert Pattinson portrays Reynolds, and as the trailer begins he is seen left seemingly for dead by his brother who is the member of a gang. Not long after, he meets up with Eric, portrayed by Guy Pearce (‘Iron Man 3,’ ‘The King’s Speech’) who is in search of that same brother and the gang he belongs to.

It’s a pairing of convenience, and even from the glimpses we see of the movie in this first trailer, it’s a brooding and melancholic world filled with hopelessness as expansive as the long stretches of desert. The music playing throughout goes a long way to intensify the mood and the emotions.

Robert Pattinson draws notice — some of it arguably unfairly so — as his post-Twilight Saga career is closely scrutinized and talked about. But there’s no doubt he is far away from that imagined world of vampires. This time he has gone the distance, yet again, to shed that old image. The 27-year-old actor has a whole lifetime of roles to inhabit, after all, and this is but one of them.

‘The Rover’ also stars Scoot McNairy, Anthony Hayes, Gillian Jones, Susan Prior, Nash Edgerton, David Field, Jamie Fallon and Samuel F. Lee. After its premiere at 2014 Cannes Film Festival, it opens in theaters in June.
