Canadian rapper and actor Drake was host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live, first episode of the new year, which also marked the debut of the new black female cast member Sasheer Zamata. He was likely the first host ever to reenact his Bar Mitzvah in his opening monologue. Get details and see video highlights!

Drake first made his appearance in the cold open as part of the Piers Morgan skit which took on the variety of scandals since the last live episode of SNL — the Christmas episode with host Jimmy Fallon and musical guest Justin Timberlake, which gave the show some of its best recent ratings. Those scandals included New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s (Bobby Moynihan) Bridge-gate scandal and Justin Bieber’s (Kate McKinnon) egg throwing episode. It was Drake who took on the role as the New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez — A-Rod — who was recently suspended for performance enhancing drugs.

From there we launched into one of the more memorable monologues as Drake took to the stage, letting the studio audience and the world at large know he is Canadian, got his start in acting on the teen series ‘Degrassi’ and that he is from Toronto where the rappers are polite and the mayor smokes crack, that would be the now infamous Tom Ford.

Drake also apologized for YOLO — “you only live once” — which has become ubiquitous, obnoxiously so, many would agree. But yet, if we must put the blame, it’s from Drake’s song “Motto.”

Drake was also happy to not just take about his Jewish heritage, son of a Jewish mother and a black father, but to give us a reenactment of his 1999 Bar Mitvah, as the young Audrey Drake Graham and his family from both sides were gathered to cross cultural hilarity.

With no fanfare, the new black female cast member, Sasheer Zamata, made her first appearance on the famed Studio 8H stage portraying Drake’s aunt.

From there we saw a variety of skits that night, some more successful than others, as is always the case in the long running show, including ‘Hip Hop Classics: Before They Were Stars’ which saw Drake portraying Lil Wayne. There was also the Nancy Grace Live skit as well as the return of the Mornin’ Miami skit which has been a favorite among viewers and critics alike.

Going viral at this point, a very true-to-life and hilarious send-up of how quickly New Year’s resolutions unravel, entitled “Resolution Revolution” which featured Drake along with Taran Killam, Jay Pharoah, and Sasheer Zamata Beside the usual vices of smoking, drinking, there were some spicier ones that perhaps not everyone might be willing to admit. It’s one thing to say you resolve to lose weight, but yet another to say you resolve not to make use of sex dolls!

Drake as musical guest first performed his classic hit ‘Started from the Bottom’ along with ‘Trophies.’ Later, with the exciting up-and-coming R&B and pop singer Jhene Aiko, he performed his new hit ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home.’

‘Weekend Update’ was notable for Vanessa Bayer’s spoof of Jacqueline Bisset’s infamous Golden Globes speech, of which no one has made heads or tails of other than to note she dropped the S-bomb and took an inordinately long time to get to the stage — and that was wonderfully spoofed as well.

All in all, another New Year begins with ‘Saturday Night Live’ — for the 39th time! — and Drake had a fine turn debuting as host. Watch video highlights below!
