Willow Smith Teams up with Brother Jaden Smith on ‘5’ Duet (Audio)

January 14, 2014

Willow Smith has recruited her brother Jaden Smith as her featured artist on her new single, ‘5.’ The duet is the latest collaboration from the children of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith and as with all of their musical efforts draws notice.

The new song ‘5’ is a follow-up to the 13-year-old Willow Smith’s controversial ‘Summer Fling,’ whose title alone suggested it might not quite be age appropriate for the then 12-year-old. The racy music video — admittedly mild in retrospect by Miley Cyrus standards — served to fuel the controversy. Not to mention that she exploded onto the music scene with what became a preteen anthem, ‘Whip My Hair’ inspiring many covers and parodies alike.

Undaunted by backlash, controversy or dictates as to what her image should be, Willow Smith’s latest release is yet another love song, a bona fide R&B ode to the amorous side of life. This time she sings such lyrics as “Can you see the words rollin’ off my tongue? / You’ve got the touch baby ’cause you’re the one.”

Her 15-year-old brother Jaden Smith contributes some lines which obviously are not springing from autobiography… “We don’t have no parents, all the misfits of foster kids / And we don’t have no friends, ’cause all you fakies are narcissists.” As the Smith children, let’s face it, if anything may strive to get out of the shadows of their famous parents and, yes, not least they do find themselves targets of paparazzi as they hang out with some of their more famous friends. Just look what happens with Jaden Smith steps out with Kylie Jenner and multimillion dollar entertainment empires collide.

If nothing else, Willow Smith keeps us guessing as to her future musical direction. There was that much anticipated debut album on Roc Nation which never came about. Later the Melodic Chaotic collaboration with DJ Fabrega from which the aforementioned ‘Summer Fling’ sprang forth. And we must remember that she is but 13 years old, with quite a future in store for her as she continues her musical exploration and finds her artistic voice. You can hear ‘5’ in its entirety below!
