Hilary Duff and Husband Mike Comrie Split

January 11, 2014

Hilary Duff and her husband Mike Comrie have split. The former Disney star, actress-singer and entrepreneur and the former NHL player released an official statement through a rep confirming the “amicable separation.”

The story was first reported by E!News with an exclusive statement from the rep of the 26-year-old Hilary Duff announcing that her three-year marriage to 33-year-old Mike Comrie had come to an end as they “have mutually decided to an amicable separation.” The statement continued: “They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other’s lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time,”

People magazine quoted an anonymous source who said “there was no major incident” and that instead “they really did drift apart.” The source went on to note the “effort and thought” they had put into making the decision and said, “They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends.”

The couple first began dating back in 2007. At that time Hilary Duff had released her third studio album,’Dignity’ and Mike Comrie’s professional hockey career was in full swing as he was playing for the New York Islanders. They were married in August 2010. Duff gave birth to the couple’s only one child in March 2012, a son named Luca Cruz who is nearly two years old.

Later as the news spread, Hillary Duff Tweeted: “Mike and I are sitting here, we are so appreciative for all of your kindness & well wishes. Not an easy day but we’re getting thru it together.”

The tone of the message underscores the amicability. A couple is enduring a split up, yet committed to stay together and to co-parent. There are some recent paparazzi photos of the two of them in the park together with their son.

Hilary Duff recently recorded a song titled, “Breathing Room,” for her upcoming album due out later this year. Now in light of recent developments, it is sadly apropos.
