Leonardo DiCaprio, who portrays the title character of Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ spoke with Ellen DeGeneres about the movie, as well as about a terrifying ordeal with a great white shark, a story and video which, understandably has gone viral.

Leonardo DiCaprio portrays Jordan Belfort in the now controversial ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ which is alternately held up as a masterpiece of cinema and blasted for glorifying the wanton sex-and-drug fueled exploits and material excesses of the real-life stock broker who was brought down on securities fraud convictions and served prison time.

While DiCaprio discussed the movie and his role in it, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show he also managed to upstage it in telling the story — previously unheard — of how he was nearly eaten by a great white shark. It was some years ago as he revealed.

He said, “I had a huge fear of sharks, and when I did Blood Diamond in 2006 I actually got stuck in a cage with a great white, which was awesome.”

Awesome is a word that’s become overused these days. But when one is in a cage with a great white shark, it does justice to the full meaning of the word — struck with awe. If anything, it’s an understatement!

DiCaprio went on to say, “It was a gigantic great white…They actually said in 30 years this has never happened, but the tuna kind of got stuck on the top of the cage and the great white leapt out and tried to bite it and went into the cage with me.”

He went on to recount the experience which, though he has not spoken of it publicly, no doubt, he remembers quite clearly, saying, “Half of its body was in and out, and I flattened down at the bottom, and it was this far away, and it chomped a few times but I survived it.”

He went on to praise the worthwhile cause of the divers whose intention for shark conservation, saying, “I don’t want to do that anymore but I don’t want to discount their work because they’re doing great stuff. But it was absolutely terrifying.”

He did also talk about ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ which comparatively puts facing a chorus of criticism in perspective as a much less terrifying experience.

He recounted an incident on the set during the filming of the scene in which his co-star Jonah Hill is choking on ham. He said, “We were doing this CPR sequence, and we had to do 70 takes, because they couldn’t get this ham to stick on my face. They had to put K-Y Jelly, and there’s literally a guy there behind this giant window with a plastic spoon just flicking ham on my face all day long.”

That’s quite the juxtaposition of an unnerving scene and the impossible-to-fabricate behind-the-scenes tidbit! There’s much more to the interview, as Leonardo DiCaprio, the Oscar-buzzed star of the movie is quite the charmer. It will be a jaw-dropping snub if he doesn’t get that Best Actor nod.
