The first trailer for ‘Veronica Mars’ has debuted. Kristen Bell returns as the title character in the big screen sequel to the television series. Catch the first glimpse of familiar characters in the trailer which had its broadcast premiere on E!News.

The highly anticipated movie is based on the cancelled — but ever popular nine years after its initial broadcast premiere — TV series of the same name.

The movie is an inspiring example of the power of a grassroots effort, as it was funded to the tune of more than $5 million with a Kickstarter campaign. Fans of the show, which was cancelled in 2007, did not settle for fan fiction and conventions, in other words, they took action and were in alignment with the like-minded original cast members and show creator, Rob Thomas, who co-wrote the script with Diane Ruggiero for the new movie and is also the director.

As seen in the new, full-length theatrical trailer, action picks up nine years after the series’ timeline. Kristen Bell’s Veronica Mars is contacted by her former boyfriend, Logan Echolls, portrayed by Jason Dohring. He’s in some deep trouble, as he is suspected of having murdered his girlfriend.

“Nine years of radio silence and yet I still kind of knew I could count on you,” he says. Or can he? After all, life goes on. Veronica Mars has not been in suspended animation; she’s no longer a moonlighting detective. She’s now a lawyer who is about to embark upon a new career in New York City.

There as also some comical scenes in the trailer from a 10-year high school reunion in the fictitious and now iconic hometown of Neptune, California.

The movie will open in limited release on March 14, 2014. The returning cast is sizable and includes Ryan Hansen, Krysten Ritter, Percy Daggs III, Tina Majorino, Francis Capra, Ken Marino and Enrico Colantoni.

With the release of the new trailer, the buzz is only getting stronger for the new movie. During Comic-Con 2013, some footage was presented during a panel discussion comprised of Kristen Bell and other cast members soon after filming had begun after the successful Kickstarter fundraising. Might there be additional movies? A full-fledged big screen franchise? But for the moment, a new movie will soon hit the silver screen with some characters who have survived small-screen cancellation.
