Miley Cyrus Spoofs MTV VMAs Performance in SNL Cold Open and Monologue (Video)

Miley Cyrus was the host of “Saturday Night Live” as well as the musical guest. Watch the cold open and her opening monologue which both spoof her now infamous MTV VMAs performance and the resulting controversy that we are still talking about!

The much anticipated episode of SNL began with that twerking, tongue liberating MTV VMA performance that started it all. Anything less would have been a shocker, after all. That performance is now weeks into a past that does not stay buried, as music artists are still asked that question…what did you think about that performance? Yes, that one.

That performance may have left some wondering if it had been a sign of the apocalypse. In the cold open it was exactly that. The post-apocalyptic world of 2045 looked back at that Miley Cyrus performance pointing a (giant foam) finger of blame; this after ruling out other possible culprits, including the government shutdown and Obamacare.

And the tragedy is that she was warned! Yes, backstage at the MTV VMAs, just moments before she took the stage, she was warned by none other than the Miley Cyrus of the Hannah Montana past — portrayed by cast member Vanessa Bayer — that her performance would be “controversial.” Does the Miley Cyrus of 2013 listen? Well, of course not! The show must go on and indeed it does, with cast members Taran Killam as Robin Thicke, Bobby Moynihan as the giant teddy bear (who whines, “We shouldn’t be doing this! This is for kids!”) and Jay Pharaoh as Will Smith. With history left unchanged, the apocalypse forges on.

As does the show. Onward, to the monologue. Miley Cyrus starts off with a promise and a reflection — “There will be no twerking tonight. I used to think twerking was cool, but now that white people are doing it, I think it’s kind of lame.” She said of the MTV VMAs performance that she got “a lot of letters from angry mothers” and “turned on fathers.”

Onward to damage control! from the “free tickets to the show” to the manufacturer of the foam finger to the apology to the manufacturers of the bottom half of shirts. The wrecking ball makes a cameo appearance, and this time, it is a naked Bobby Moynihan who’s riding it. With so little time, and so much to cover, props are needed!

Did she succeed? Did she meet expectations? The videos are below. The live show is preserved forever and all we know for sure is that we are still talking about Miley Cyrus. Hmmm, what was that about the apocalypse?!
