‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’ New Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug Debuts

October 1, 2013

Watch the second trailer for ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug.’ It gives the first glimpse of Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the dragon in the second movie of Peter Jackson’s ‘Hobbit’ trilogy. Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Richard Armitage and many, many others star in the highly anticipated sequel.

The new movie is a follow-up to producer, writer and director Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,’ released in 2012. It will, in turn be followed by ‘The Hobbit: There and Back Again,’ in December 2014. All are based on the classic 1937 J.R.R. Tolkin novel ‘The Hobbit’ a prequel to ‘Lord of the Rings.’

The new trailer runs two and a half minutes and its rich in plot and subplot, and, as noted, gives us the first glimpse of the dragon, Smaug, whose ruinous evil lives up the the title. After the release of the first trailer, curiosity has built up over the eventual emergence of the dragon.

The curiosity is now satiated for now, as we see the voice and motion portrayal of Smaug by Benedict Cumberbatch (picture above). He also portrays — though voice and motion capture — the sorcerer Necromancer. But it is the dragon we’re more curious about. We hear the thunderous voice of the Smaug, which more than meets expectations of what a powerful and destructive dragon should sound like. He intones, “Thief, where are you? Come now. Don’t be shy. Step into the light.”

So just who is this voice of the dragon? Benedict Cumberbatch is known for his portrayal of the iconic detective in the BBC series, “Sherlock” as well as the movie,”The Fifth Estate,” in which he stars as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. He had his villainous turn recently in JJ Abrams’ ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’

And there is much more to see in this new trailer! There are glimpses of Bilbo Baggins, portrayed by Martin Freeman, who is determined to recapture the Dwarf Kingdom of Erbor from Smaug. Also starring in the movie is Ian McKellen, who returns as the Wizard Gandalf. Richard Armitage portrays Thorin Oakenshield. Orlando Bloom returns as the elf Legolas. Also seen in the trailer is a new character, the elf woman Tauriel, portrayed by Evangeline Lilly.

The highly anticipated movie will open in theaters in conventional 2D, 3D, HFR 3D and IMAX on December 13th, and as such, an early Christmas present for longtime LOTR fans. Until the next trailer or banner or poster is released, this is all we can hang onto until release date.
