Mykayla Comstock: Medical Marijuana at 7-Years-Old!

November 26, 2012

Mykayla Comstock’s medical marijuana use is a major headline…because she is only 7-years-old! Yes, she has a serious disease, but the story is a tad more compicated than it sounds.

For people who only read the headline of this story, it could easily sound like one of those successes of marijuana reform. You know – “a sick kid on the verge of death finds a small quality of life by consuming pot.” Sadly, that is not the case.

Yes, the girl has cancer, and is even going through chemotherapy, but she is not terminal. Add to that the fact that her own oncologist has said her use of marijuana is “inappropriate.”

Before I go any further, let me be clear. I support the lawful use of medical marijuana by people who truthfully need it, but this is egregious.

The mother is a medical marijuana patient whose boyfriend is growing the pot himself. She even claims she believes it can heal. That’s where this gets out of control. Not a single doctor who is worth anything will tell you pot heals. It can absolutely help with pain, nausea and sleep issues, even mental outlook – but it doesn’t heal. Oh, and mom smoked it while pregnant and breastfeeding.

This little girl is being given extremely potent marijuana oil, far more than even a regular smoker would consume – something like the equivalent of ten joints in a 24-hour period.

Naturally, there is some concern over her brain development. Her father, who divorced her mother, is raising some questions:

“She was stoned out of her mind…All she wanted to do was lay on the bed and play video games… “She’s not terminally ill…She is going to get over this, and with all this pot, they are going to hinder her brain growth.”

Regardless, Oregon law apparently supports this kind of nonsense. In cases where children are involved, they leave it up to the parent.

It sounds like the only way this guy can stop the situation is to start a custody fight.

Anyway, time will tell if this little girl gets better. We’ll see.
