According to Bloomberg, “The Simpsons Movie” opened with $71.9 million in ticket sales in U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend, leading at the box office and providing a boost to News Corp.’s 20th Century Fox film studio.
After 18 years on Fox network, America’s favorite two-dimensional family is making its first appearance on theaters and roles in loads of cash, an estimated $29.1 million on its first day of release on Friday alone. The Simpsons Movie represents the fifth-biggest start so far this year and will likely exceed forecasts for the weekend that are issued on Sunday.
This pushed ‘I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry’ down into the No. 2 spot with $19.06 million in sales, ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ into third at $17.07 million and Hairspray to fourth with $15.55 million in ticket purchases.
The film reportedly cost the News Corp.-owned studio about $70 million to make.
