Her father, Ricky Pempengco, 40, reportedly ‘brushed up’ against Angel Capili, who allegedly was drunk, at a store in San Pedro Township (just south of Manila), Philippines. Capili allegedly stabbed Pempengo with an ice pick several times in the chest and back and ran from the scene. A 20,000 pesos ($470) reward has been offered for information on the alleged killer. Authorities believe that the killing was a ‘random act‘.
During a 2008 appearance on the Oprah show, Charice remembered as a 3-year-old she saw her father be physically violent towards her mother. Shortly thereafter, she and her mother fled. “We left my dad, and after that, I never saw him and I don’t want to see him.”
While the Filipina star was estranged from her father, she took to her Twitter account and said (in Tagalog and English):
“Last night, I was with somebody that looked like my dad. I didn’t know that my dad was trying to make his presence felt. I just want you to know that we had a really great relationship before all the trouble started. My mother didn’t know that when I was young, my father told me that he wanted me to be a soldier because I’m a fearless woman. I loved him, and I will still love him. He’s still my dad after all.”
She has canceled an appearance in Singapore and Tweeted her apologies:
“I am very sorry to all my fans from Singapore. I am not going to be there to be part of David Foster and Friends concert. I have to go back to the Philippines as soon as possible to be with my family. I hope you all understand. I love you all and I will see you next year.”
Charice, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
