Kate Winslet Escapes As Richard Branson’s House Burns Down

August 22, 2011

Kate Winslet and 20 other people escaped from an epic fire on Richard Branson’s private Island, after lightning struck the house and burned it down.

This is not a movie headline, but it was probably the biggest adrenaline rush of Kate’s life. Especially since she helped save Richard’s 90 year old mother! Yes, it is true!

Branson wrote on his blog,
“Many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90 year mum out of the main house to safety. She was wondering when a Director was going to shout CUT!”

The Caribbean Island was struck by a tropical storm, which brought heavy rain and winds up to 90 mph. All the guests escaped unharmed, including Richard’s daughter, Holly, and Kate, her boyfriend and her children, Mia and Joe.

Branson said he does plan to rebuild the 74-acre Necker Island, in the British Virgin Islands,

“It’s very much the Dunkirk Spirit here. We want to rebuild the house as soon as we can. We have a wonderful staff here and we want them to stay in work,” he said. “There’s a lot of damage and we won’t be able to stick it back together again right away. It was a beautiful house.”

Sounds like it was quite the scary event! I watched an episode of cribs where his island was featured, and it looked like everything was open so any rain or wind would cause quite some damage. I am so glad everyone is okay! Dealing with tropical storms here in Florida is like second nature, but I can’t imagine going through that on a private island, where the housing is burning down! Just craziness. A vacation to remember, that is for sure!
