Joey Lawrence has been acting pretty much all his life, lucky for us too I must say. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing him and you can read all about it here.

Joey Lawrence

You met him on Gimme A Break, fell in love with him on Blossom and now can see him all grown up every Wednesday on the ABC Family hit show Melissa and Joey. Yes I am talking about the oh so talented Joey Lawrence who went from cute little boy to bona fide hottie all in front of a TV camera. Recently I was lucky enough to be a part of a Q&A interview session with Joey, who is even more amazing off camera then on.

The chat started off being focused on Lawrence’s show with Melissa Joan Hart, if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend you check it out. Joey talked about how he and Melissa wanted to do a show that was geared towards adults but yet that you could watch with your family. Meaning the humor is clearly for adults but it is not offensive or inappropriate for parents to watch with their kids. It is sort of a romantic comedy after all.

Here is what Joey had to say when I asked him a couple of questions.

Rachelle: What was it about this character that made you want to take on the role?
Joey: Well it was a character that I sort of came up with. This is a guy that I wanted to play on TV, in the half hour comedy world anyway. He’s sort of a guy’s guy. I think he can be brutally honest at times, but I love that about him. He shouldn’t be able to get away with some of the things that he says, but he does because there’s nothing under it other than just him being straightforward and honest. And that’s a guy that you want to hate, but you can’t help but like him, you know? I mean he really is the kind of guy that if you came up to him and said, “Does this dress make me look fat?” He would probably say, “Well it doesn’t make you look thin.” You know? And initially you’d go, Oh my God, that was so rude! But at the end of the day you go, it’s kind of refreshing that he was being honest. He wasn’t being mean. He was like, look, you’re an attractive lady and I’ve seen you wear things that look hotter on you. You’d almost kind of want that, weirdly enough. I love the fact that he’s a financial wizard and that he’s sort of a fiscally conservative guy. This is a character that doesn’t exist on TV and it’s sort of fun for me to portray him a little bit. He’s a little Bruce Willis; he’s a little Alex P. Keaton and that guy isn’t really on TV right now and that’s kind of why I wanted to play him.

Rachelle: What are any similarities or differences that you have with your character?
Joey: We’re both a little OCD. We both love to cook. He’s a big sports guy; so am I. I’m not a financial wizard but I enjoy making money, so we share that in common. I think as an actor you always try to bring as much personal experience to the role. That’s kind of important.

Rachelle: You have a new single coming out can you talk a little bit about it?
Joey: The new single is my first single coming out in like 12 years. It’s called “Rolled.” The whole record comes out in August and it’s a really a great pop record so check it out.

That wasn’t all Lawrence revealed during the Q&A session. Nope he was quite open with us which was awesome. He talked about how great it was to be working with Melissa Joan Hart again. The two co-stars have an amazing rapport and a great working relationship. He shared that Curb Your Enthusiasm is his guilty TV pleasure but that he does catch the Kardashian shows thanks to his wife who watches them. One little interesting tid bit that I learned was that Joey loves to cook, when you see his character cooking on the show most of time Lawrence is actually cooking. His favorite things to cook include Italian stuff like baked manicotti, stuffed shells and vegetable lasagna. He also likes cooking fish and claims he makes a pretty good lemon Dijon chicken with risotto. It all sounds fabulous to me.

It is no secret Joey has spent his entire life in the entertainment world, which kind of makes you wonder how he has stayed so grounded. The actor simply said he has a great life. Although he has worked his rear end off for everything he has ever gotten, it’s always been about the work and about continuing to be able to work in an industry he loves. He also said that every project is an opportunity for growth, to wear a new hat so to speak and I really loved that. Take for instance his new show, Joey is an executive producer which is new to him so even with all his years in the biz he too is still learning, pretty cool I think.

Joey Lawrence was every bit and more the great guy you think he would be. He could not have been more enjoyable to talk to. Truly one of the best people I have ever had the pleasure of interviewing. One last thing if I for one was curious as to why he grew his hair back, well he just likes to change it up now and then, so freaking cute.
