The Season 2 finale of Glee left a lot of people scratching their heads about the fate of some of their favorite characters. What would happen to Rachel and Finn? Now that Blaine and Kurt are an item, will we see more of them together even though Kurt has returned to McKinley? What about crazy Quinn? The strange Puck/Lauren relationship? Will Sam’s family ever get out of that hotel? And what about the Artie/Brittany/Santana love triangle?! Season 3 will be quite the event, but it also appears to be the end of an era!
We got some great casting news recently, with Darren Criss and Harry Shrum Jr. becoming series regulars, and it appears like Chord Overstreet will probably be back despite some early doubts about his return (unless he decides to bail, but the show is hoping for a return). We will even get a new character (at least for 7 episodes) when they finally crown a winner of my new guilty pleasure, Oxygen’s reality competition “The Glee Project”.
But it is worth noting that more than just a few of our favorite characters will be in their senior year, and what happens once we watch them receive their diploma? Well, we got our answer as it has been announced that series staples Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Corey Monteith will not be returning for Season 4 once their characters graduate!
What?! How?! Why?! Will it even be the same show at that point? Will Glee cease to exist?! These were all my initial reactions to hearing that pretty much the foundation of the show would be gone, but what else were they supposed to do? The show is about a high school glee club, so once the characters leave high school we can’t really expect them to still hang around the school, singing and dancing through the hallways.
In fact, a good chunk of the cast will be “graduating” next season, so I am sure this isn’t the first announcement of cast members leaving that we will get. It is just a shock that the three main characters have already announced their departure after next season.
I think its safe to say that Season 4 will have a complete cast overhaul, and that the fate of the show will be up in the air. Hardcore Gleeks will be reluctant to accept the replacements, and it may take some time for the show to build the steam that it has with the current cast. Finding talented actors won’t be a problem, but building new characters that people will love as much as the current cast will be a challenge. Fingers crossed!
What do you guys think of Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Corey Monteith leaving Glee? Do you think the show can still be successful with an almost entirely new cast? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
