NBC New York is reporting that a twenty-two year old New York native by the name of James Whittemore made his way illegally into the entrance of David Letterman’s studio. Breaking a metal bar outside to gain access, Whittemore then began vandalizing the premise, breaking glass panels on the doors, overturning stanchions in the lobby, and knocking down garbage buckets.

CBS and Letterman’s company Worldwide Pants has since released a statement about the crazy and senseless incident after police arrived at the scene around 7 a.m. Sunday morning:

“We were notified that NYPD apprehended an intruder who gained access and vandalized the lobby of the Ed Sullivan Theater this morning. The Late Show’s set was not accessed, however, and the show will be taping as usual tomorrow. We are grateful for the NYPD’s quick and effective response.”

After authorities arrived they managed to take the drunk intruder into custody, also bringing him to the hospital after he suffered from cuts to the head. Whittemore didn’t manage to get too far, the official door into the interior of David Letterman studio was secured by padlocks, stopping him from doing any further damage to the set. He was later booked and arrested at the Midtown-North Precinct, with charges of burglary and criminal mischief.

Letterman has been working in the same studio since 1993 according to US Weekly. The sixty-four year old late night host will still continue his show Monday night since nothing was harmed, stopping production. Letterman has Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, actor Chris Evans, comedian George Lopez, and Incubus scheduled to appear on July 11th!
