It seems like all we do is report on who split with who, who’s getting a divorce, yada yada yada. So why not focus on the opposite and celebrate the love of the longest married celebrity couples? Here’s my list of some of my favorites who have been wed 15 plus years!
Danny DeVito and his wife Rhea Perlman exchanged vows in 1982 after the two started dating in 1970. Their 29 year marriage produced three children – Lucy, 28, Grace, 26, and Jacob, 23. Perlman was once asked what the secret was behind their longtime wedded bliss:
“Love. Love. I mean, really. You know what? Who knows. The secret to success is to try to never figure that out!”
Ozzy Osbourne wed the former Sharon Levy in 1982. Together, they have three children, Aimee, 27, Kelly, 26, and Jack, 25. Theirs has been a marriage who has seen their fair share of ups and downs. In 2002, their reality show, The Osbournes, debuted on MTV and was an instant hit. The show ran until 2005. Back in 2003, Larry King asked Ozzy what the secret was of his marriage, to which he replied:
“I think we — it’s that rock ‘n’ roll and you’re rocking and rolling, you don’t give up at the first bend. You know, marriage, especially in Los Angeles here, is — it’s — you get married one week and divorce the next. I mean, I couldn’t imagine myself being with any other woman, other than my wife Sharon.”
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were wed in 1988. The two started dating in 1985 but first met in 1981, after she made a guest appearance on Hanks’ show Bosom Buddies. Their 23 year marriage saw the birth of their two sons, Chet, 21, and Truman, 15. They have appeared in the following films together: Volunteers, Sleepless in Seattle, That Thing You Do and the upcoming Larry Crowne, which Hanks co-stars with Julia Roberts.
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have been married for 22 years. They have two children, Travis, who is 21, and Sosie, who is 19. I had a huge crush on Bacon in high school. Remember a little movie called Footloose? Sedgwick once explained what makes their marriage successful:
“We got married when I was really young and we got very lucky. Staying married for so long takes luck and a lot of hard work. We don’t have a fantasy marriage … It’s all about working on it. If Kevin and I can get dinner, a movie and sex in … that’s awesome. If not, just sex and dinner is great.”
Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan, probably one of my all time favorite couples, said their ‘I Do’s on July 16, 1988. They first met in 1985 when Pollan portrayed Fox’s girlfriend Ellen on NBC’s Family Ties. Every time I hear ‘At This Moment’ by Billy Vera & The Beaters I can’t help but think of them. They have four children, Sam, who is 22, Aquinnah and Schuyler (twins), who are 16, and their youngest, Esme is 9. On how the couple keeps their marriage intact? Fox said:
“We just give each other the benefit of the doubt. We realize that we are lucky to have each other, and to have our family.”
John Travolta and Kelly Preston married in 1991. My heart goes out to this couple, whose 16-year-old son Jett died in 2009 following a seizure while the family was on vacation in the Bahamas. They have two other children, Ella, who is 11, and Benjamin, 7 months. The two were obviously grief stricken following the death of their oldest child, and for the most part stayed out of the public eye. In May of last year, they announced that they were expecting. Little Benjamin arrived in November of 2010. After the heartbreak they went through the year before, they definitely deserved some happiness.
David Bowie and his supermodel wife Iman exchanged vows on April 24, 1992. They met on a blind date in 1990, and they can thank their hairdresser for setting up that momentous occasion. Their daughter, Alexandria, is 10 years old. Earlier this year, Iman revealed that she knew Bowie was ‘the one’ after only dating two weeks. Like I’ve said before, when you know, you know. It doesn’t matter how long or short you’ve been together.
So there you have it, folks. My list of favorite longest married celebrity couples. May they enjoy many many more years of wedded bliss!
