Supernatural Frontierland Recap

April 22, 2011

What an episode! Dean was easily my favorite part of the show tonight along with several jaw droppers! Yes some serious stuff, and what about that blanket?! If you missed it, get our recap of Supernatural Frontierland here, the episode where the Winchester brothers visit the Wild Wild West!

Supernatural Frontierland

Usually when show runners look like they’re about to stray from the main storyline, opting for more of a special presentation (so to speak), the episode can sometimes end up feeling like a filler, not Supernatural though! Frontierland with Sam and Dean not only entertained with their witty dialogue (posse magnet and Clint Eastwood!), but they stayed on track, serving the big picture, while letting us see them in a new landscape.

Picking up from last week, they delved into Castiel’s secretive behavior, and Sam and Dean’s latest problem with the Mother of All – Eve! So what where the main highlights of the hour? For starters, the hour kicks off with a glum Sam who is not nearly as excited as Dean about making a trip back in time, or about saloon wenches and the chance to dress up as a cowboy! After searching the Campbell library the boys come across a book that tells them Samuel Colt is the man they want to talk to about phoenix’s. How do you do that when the man is dead? You get touched by an angel, that’s how!

Surprisingly though Cas isn’t the genie they get, at first anyways. Instead a cold and stern lieutenant Rachel stops by to tell the guys that Cas has enough going on without having to help them with their petty human problems. A little like Ruby wouldn’t you say? Except she isn’t around for the long haul after Cas kills her off. He’s a desperate angel who needs to defeat Rafael.

Meanwhile, Sam and Dean are in Sunrise, Wyoming with a bag of gold, a gun, dressed up with shirts that are too clean to blend in with the locals. Splitting up with only 24 hours time to get the ashes, Dean becomes sheriff after the ghost from a recent hanging terrorizes the town, while Sam finds Samuel Colt whose not only the fastest demon shooter in the West, but has a love for the bottle, and cant seem to decide if he’s drunk, or not drunk enough when Sam tells him he’s from 2011!

By the show’s end Dean discovers that the man who was hung in the square is their phoenix, hence the high noon shoot out with the colt where Dean blows him away Eastwood style! Unfortunately, their time runs out just as Dean attempts to scoop up the phoenix ashes and in a flash the Winchester brothers are back at Bobby’s house. Did your heart leap to your throat?! After all that they come home with nothing, but in Bobby’s words his “soulonoscopy” to bring them back after Cas’ brawl with Rachel wasn’t for nothing. Samuel Colt saves them with a little Back to the Future moment, delivering a package with Sam’s cell phone and the ashes. How’s that for crafty?!

Stay tune for next week when Supernatural airs Mommy Dearest where “Sam, Dean, Bobby and Castiel track Eve to a small town in Oregon. The guys discover the townspeople have been converted to demons, but surprisingly, they all appear to be dying. When they finally do meet Eve, she decides to torture the brothers by bringing back their mother, Mary Winchester, as a demon.” And don’t forget to tell us what you thought about the series Western episode?
