Is Charlie Sheen’s Tour Winning After All?

April 6, 2011

Some outlets seemed overwhelmed with glee to report that Charlie Sheen’s ‘Violent Torpedo’ tour had a rough start. After being booed ferociously in Detroit, many wondered whether the show would even make it to the next city.

Before you critics dive into an ‘I told you so,’ style rant, perhaps you should consider how fans received Sheen at his last two shows. The naysayers were out in full force last week before the guy even hit the stage in Michigan, almost as if they were willing him to fail. Some even wondered what he could possibly talk about for 90 minutes.

For a brief moment, those people were grinning from ear to ear, proudly proclaiming that nutty ‘ole Charlie is a washed up has been suffering from a profound mental break down.

As if in response to critics, packed houses in Chicago and Cleveland seemed to give the tour just the boost it needed. Reports confirm that fans at the last two gigs not only seemed pleased with Sheen, but even offered up a standing ovation afterward.

Fans of the 80s classic ‘Major League’ may understand why a Cleveland audience would be receptive to the fallen actor. While making his entrance to the song ‘Wild Thing,’ he donned an Indians jersey, and even wore a pair of goofy eyeglasses much like his character Ricky Vaughn.

For me Sheen’s sudden popularity is reminiscent of former JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater. Both play on our feelings of standing up to ‘the man,’ which is something many Americans can relate to right now. Sure, sure, Sheen is a rich actor and Slater is more of an ‘average Joe,’ but both have that trait in common.

Perhaps audiences at the last two shows were irritated with all of the negativity surrounding the Detroit show and wanted to give him some love. Or maybe it was just plain better.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the ‘Violent Torpedo of Truth’ tour to see how the next few shows go.
