It is St. Patrick’s Day and for our friends at the hit show Destination Truth that means a live show, how freaking cool is that? Thanks to an interview with Josh Gates from the show I got a little bit of info about the live event which you can read all about right here!
I was lucky enough to be a participant in a recent Q&A interview with Josh Gates from Destination Truth. He was unbelievably amazing to chat with. It was seriously one of the best interviews I have been lucky enough to do. Not only is what he does really amazing but to hear him talk about his work was so enjoyable.
Josh was very open about the upcoming live show which you can imagine has a whole different set of challenges than a taped show. The main one being Gates and crew have no idea what the heck the challenges are going to be because it is live and a lot of those challenges won’t present themselves until the night of the show. He put it best when he said anything can happen and he is sure it will happen. The other challenge is filming internationally and trying to broadcast that live. However he is prepared to an extent with some amazing technology including wireless backpack cameras that are able to transmit live and actually show viewers various people investigating throughout the ruins. Sounds awesome to me! He also has a couple of fears like things going wrong technically and of course swearing. There is also the fear that absolutely nothing will happen and it will be a bust. The flip side to that is it can also be very exciting when you don’t know what is going to happen.
If you are going to do a live show you have to do some research right? Well that is exactly what Josh and the rest of the team did. They learned some pretty cool things while reaching Ireland and he was nice enough to share some of them with us which was really cool. If you watched the leprechaun story last year there is a really intense connection in Ireland to their folklore. People there tend to be very invested in paranormal reports so it is important for Josh and the gang to be very respectful of their beliefs, as you know those stories literally “define Irish culture” as Josh put it.
Although the show was a big focus there was only so much Josh could talk about because what is going to happen is really unknown at this time. He was gracious enough to give us some more info about him, like what his favorite place he has visited so far. It involves an upcoming episode that takes place in Antarctica, which is a place Josh had wanted to visit for a very long time. So that was his fave as of now anyway and he called it an incredible experience.
Josh has quite the fascinating life and career which brought the question of how he got inspired to work in the investigative industry if you will. Basically he is a travel enthusiast thanks to a British mother who would take him to England once a year and a father who was a commercial driver that worked overseas a lot! From an early age he had a very intense desire to travel and work in travel television so that he could go places and bring incredible stories to viewers. As for how he came to the USA hit show well that is was relatively normal. He met with the powers that be who liked that he was so enthusiastic about travel which made him a perfect fit for the show as well as the network.
I had a couple of questions for Josh that really focused on his thoughts about the investigations he had already done.
Rachelle: You’ve done so many different investigations all over the world is there one that has a special place in your heart or was a little bit more meaningful to you than the other ones?
Josh Gates: There have been a number of them. I look back very fondly on our investigation of King Tut’s tomb, as well as our trip to Chernobyl. Even though that was a very difficult place to investigate I feel so amazed that we were able to achieve our goals of going to those places, negotiating the permissions to spend time there, actually filming and bringing those experiences back. There are a few episodes from this coming season that I’m really proud of as well. We were able to visit Namibia in Southwestern Africa, which is a country that is just not featured on television almost at all. It’s an amazing place, incredible dunes and deserts. It’s a really barren landscape. We have a couple of great stories there, a really interesting creature sighting in the northern part of the country, and a very cool paranormal story as well. It’s another place that I was so excited to visit and a place I’ve wanted to go for a long time. For me, I think the more difficult and exotic places always kind of stand out.
Rachelle: Are there any investigations you’ve done that you didn’t feel were completely answered or that you weren’t satisfied with the answer and you’d like to revisit?
Josh Gates: There are a lot of episodes we’d like to revisit and we talk about that from time to time. We’ve never revisited an episode yet in the show, having done it for four years and I think there’s a lot of opportunities for us to go back. Certainly there’s plenty of episodes that have unanswered questions. I think a lot of the time we’re able to make determinations at the end of the show that Creature X, or paranormal Entity X doesn’t exist, because we can explain it away with alternate explanations, or natural things that are happening in the environment. But there are plenty of places where we’re not able to make that determination and we’re left feeling like, either we weren’t able to fully realize what the eyewitnesses had seen, or we had seen things ourselves that we weren’t able to fully explain. I think that’s also part of the fun of the show is that you’re not going to throw a net over these animals at the end of every hour. You’re going to be left sometimes with more questions than you came in with, and that invites us to go back and maybe take a look at some of those stories again. So, I think in the coming year or two you might see us revisit a few of the places that we’ve gone to. There are a number of places that people frequently request that we go back and check out again as well.
I had a fantastic time speaking with Josh Gates of Destination Truth. He is a very interesting person involved in an area I know very little about so listening to him was so much fun. I honestly cannot say enough good things about him.
I know it is St. Patty’s day but if you aren’t participating in the drunken debauchery of the day then I highly suggest you check out the live Destination Truth show beginning at 7PM EST & PST on Syfy. All new episodes begin airing on Tuesday March 22nd at 9PM.
