When I first heard that the newly minted funniest man on Twitter was going live on Ustream I did a spit take with my coffee. But not only did Charlie Sheen’s webcast deliver, it also cemented my perception that there is only one rock star from Mars.
Some say his rantings are getting old, but I happen to find them refreshing. Ironically enough, it wasn’t until the moment he was let go from his sitcom that I tuned in.
Maybe it was my loyalty to 80s movie stars, particularly those from the Leslie Neilson era, but I have been on his side for quite some time. I’m not at all a fan of his alleged drug use, or erratic behavior, but he is the current king of the Internet meme.
In that spirit, he made a move to speak to his fans via Ustream in a new feature he calls Charlie’s Korner.
The first installment included a giddy Sheen, sporting a fedora and smoking a cigarette as he did he best to rehash all of the one-liners of the last few weeks. He repeatedly references warlocks throughout, to the point that the joke is almost worn out.
The production is hilariously awful. Sure, the video is shot in crisp HD, and the sound is nice and clear, but there is a glaring sense of chaos to the overall rhythm of the broadcast. At one point a friend of Sheen’s seems to randomly stand up and request that all of his Twitter followers (now in the millions) send tweets about what they would like him to talk about.
By the end I’m left wondering if the man who seemed to ‘get’ the web, is beginning to veer off course. Will all of his gleeful rebellion backfire, or is he digging himself a deeper hole?
Time will tell. Until then, watch the Charlie Sheen webcast below via Ustream. What are your thoughts?
