The legendary actor is now using his influence to help those elderly who are victims of any abuse. Mickey Rooney testifies to Congress about his own struggles with this issue in hopes to encourage more legislation to help. For the full story, with more photos and videos, keep reading below.
Some politicians are trying to pass an initiative to care for the aging community. If this gets approved it will create an Office of Elder Justice and make it a crime to abuse senior citizens in any way. They called in the actor to cite his specific instances recently.
Just over a week ago the 90 year old star was granted a restraining order against his stepson with allegations that he and his wife have been depriving him of food and medicine. Mickey Rooney testifies that they also took control of his finances and abused him emotionally.
“I felt trapped, scared, used and frustrated,” Rooney told a special Senate committee considering legislation to curb abuses of senior citizens. “But above all, when a man feels helpless, it’s terrible.”
Rooney became an actor in the 20’s and is known for his parts in the Andy Hardy films. He was very passionate about his art, but now he is redirecting his focus to helping others who have gone through what he has. He practically yelled:
“I’m asking you to stop this elderly abuse. I mean to stop it. Now. Not tomorrow, not next month, but now. It’s a crime and we will not allow it in the United States of America.”
They want to get something passed that can be sent to President Obama quickly. I personally think this is a great idea and I hope there will finally be some strict guidelines for the care of the elderly. What do you think about this whole initiative and the actor’s statements?
