The Apollo 18 trailer premiered online this weekend. The new film produced by Timur Bekmambetov and directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego depicts a secret mission to the Moon. Things go horribly wrong for the two astronauts as they encounter extra-terrestrials. The film, due out on April 22, is shot in the docu-drama style of Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity. The trailer begins with “In the years following Apollo 17 there was unconfirmed intelligence of an 18th mission. No evidence has ever been found. Until now.” Watch the trailer below and get ready for a scary ride!

The plot is simple. The Department of Defense (DoD) launches a secret mission to the Moon after Apollo 17. Nobody pays attention to it as ‘Moon Fever’ has waned. More people watched reruns of ‘I Dream of Genie’ than the last actual lunar missions. The astronauts purpose is somewhat unclear from the trailer itself. The rumor mill is that the DoD wanted to investigate possible alien life reported during previous lunar flights.

In truth, NASA did have the hardware to launch three additional moon missions. Once Congress scrapped the space agency’s budget, those extra missions were canceled. One Saturn V rocket had it’s 3rd stage converted into America’s first space station, Skylab. Three Apollo spacecraft with crews were launched to rendezvous with Skylab using the smaller Saturn IB rocket to reach Earth orbit. A fourth Apollo was launched using the Saturn IB after Skylab for a joint mission with the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft, bringing an end to the Apollo program.

The Apollo 18 trailer which premiered on the Internet this weekend is getting plenty of viewers. The Sci-Fi/Horror film by producer Timur Bekmambetov and directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego is a low-budget affair, costing only $5 million dollars. The film depicts a secret mission to the Moon was made in the style of Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity to heighten it’s paranoia. Apollo 18 is set to be released nationwide in theaters on April 22.
