Band Breakups: Why The Good Ones Never Last

The White Stripes break up that happened last week has got me thinking about other groups that have called it quits over the years. For bands, breakups happen for all different reasons. Keep reading below for an interesting look back over some great musical groups and their ends, with more photos and videos too!

Meg & Jack White ended things in a positive way saying they wanted to “preserve what is beautiful and special.” They did not do a farewell tour or anything and ended things quietly. That is not the case however, for many other acts!

One of the most memorable band breakups in history has to be The Beatles. Though they are one of the most talented and iconic groups, their history is filled with arguments and creative differences. A cohesive group to begin with, it wasn’t long before they all started focusing on their own goals and the band was no more. Later they did talk about a reunion, but after the death of John Lennon, it would never happen.

Some others who have had troubles include The Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis and The Supremes. The Smashing Pumpkins started having troubles when drummer John Melvoin and Jimmy Chamberlin overdosed (Melvoin died). After a farewell concert they left on bad terms and never fully reunited. Oasis had a troubled past as well, with two members Liam & Noel being brothers. Eventually the fighting became too much and they split in 2009.

The problems that are faced by the musical groups are not limited to a type of music, as we have seen these issues in many different types of acts. Anytime you get a few people together and try to achieve a common goal, issues arise. And when you have very talented people who want to succeed, it is amplified. At least for The White Stripes they seemed to end things on a good note! I have mentioned just a few band breakups here and would love to hear which ones you most remember and why. After you check out these pictures and video, leave me your comments below.
