Fergie on Christina Aguilera’s Mistake: ‘I Completely Understand’

February 7, 2011

Fergie let her respect for Christina Aguilera be known this week—despite Xtina’s butchering of the National Anthem’s lyrics at the opening of Super Bowl XLV. Both women were featured musical acts at this year’s game.

Searches for the clip have easily been one of the hottest on the web in the last 24 hours. The video shows any singer’s worst fears coming true, but could it be that nerves got to one of the biggest global acts in pop music? Apparently, so.

Never fear, fellow Super Bowl performer Fergie was one of the first to jump to Christina Aguilera’s rescue following the embarrassing lyrical fail.

The Black Eyed Peas’ vocal heavyweight spoke to a radio show today, where she said:

“I completely understand. She’s one of the best singers of our time. Nobody can take that away from you… But you get nervous at these things. We’re human.”

One thing Fegie-Ferg mentioned that many of us agree with is that her own performance left much to be desired. Yes, the costume design and effects were stunning, but her trademark bluesy rasp just wasn’t what it has been in the past. She even called her own vocals ‘pitchy.’

As for Christina, she had only this to say about her mistake:

“I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and the true spirit of its anthem came through.”

Even though she sang ‘proudly watched at the twilight’s last gleaming’ rather than ‘O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,’ her pitch and tone were wonderful as always.

Unfortunately for her, a flub like this one is not one that people soon forget. It may actually become somewhat of a sore spot in her career, which has seen better days.

Come on people! This is a ‘tempest in a teapot”! For cryin’ out loud, the CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT screwed up the Presidential Oath of Office when he swore in Obama! So she flubbed a couple of words of the Star Spangled Banner at The Super Bowl… whooppee! This is not a life altering event.
