After a very rewarding career in Hollywood, we now hear some personal details about Geri Jewell. The actress best known from “The Facts of Life” has made a lesbian confession. In her memoir she talks about the challenges of her life and how she pushed through those and became a television legend. She was the first disabled person to get a recurring role in a sitcom and has used her influence to help others.

The 54 year old woman began her career as a stand up comedian, before being cast on “The Facts of Life.” On December 24, 1980 she became the first disabled person to star in a show. After this series she has also been on others such as “Two of a Kind,” “The Young and the Restless” and HBO’s “Deadwood” (2003-2006). Geri Jewell has also received many awards and done motivational speeches and training for some top companies and the government.

Now she makes a lesbian confession, among other things, in her book. ‘I’m Walking As Straight As I Can’ does not only address her romantic life, but it obviously talks about her condition. Cerebral palsy is a brain disorder that affects the part involved with body movement, but it can also impair communication and perception. Along with this, she also discusses financial issues, marital problems and drug addictions as well.

This amazing woman has made a big impact on the world since the 80’s and now there are many more opportunities for disabled or handicapped individuals to follow in her footsteps. On a related note, many people were upset when they found out the actor who plays Artie in “Glee” is not disabled in real life. The times are still evolving, but the more people like this woman speak out, the more progress we will have.

What do you think about Geri Jewell’s career and her new book where she makes a lesbian confession? Why do you think she held it in for so long? Enjoy these pictures and video from her first appearance, then leave me your comments below.

Why do you consider it to be a “confession” at all? The word “confession” implies that she did something wrong, or that she’s admitting to something bad. She’s not “confessing” that she’s a lesbian – she’s simply acknowledging it.
Her book sounds like it will be very inspirational. She obviously faced a lot of hardships in life becaue of her condition, and she overcame them. If she went through drug addicition and conquered it, so much the better.
The fact that she is gay … that’s interesting, I guess (because we didn’t know it), but it’s hardly controversial or earthshaking. And it’s not a “confession.”
