According to reports, Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. who suffered from Alzheimer’s, passed away today. The Shriver family released a statement following their significant loss with the following:

“Our dad, Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., lovingly known as ‘Sarge,’ today went to heaven to join the love of his life, our mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. He was surrounded by his five children, five children in-law, and his 19 grandchildren. He was a man of giant love, energy, enthusiasm, and commitment. He lived to make the world a more joyful, faithful, and compassionate place. He worked on stages both large and small but in the end, he will be best known for his love of others.”

Indeed he did. Not only is he recognized for his seat as director of the Peace Corps, architect of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s war on poverty, the United States ambassador to France and the Democratic candidate for vice president in 1972, it’s obvious that he really had an understanding of what public service is. Even President Barrack Obama honored his brilliance stating that the world lost “one of the brightest lights of the greatest generation.” In addition to “his many enduring contributions, his loss will be felt in all of the communities around the world.”

Sargent Shriver himself couldn’t have said it better with his views pertaining to life and death:

“The politics of death is bureaucracy, routine, rules, status quo. The politics of life is personal initiative, creativity, flair, dash, a little daring. The politics of death is calculation, prudence, measured gestures. The politics of life is experience, spontaneity, grace, directness. The politics of death is fear of youth. The politics of life is to trust the young to their own experiences.”
